Songs that could NOT have been written in Europe
I can't believe it but it is time for another musical challenge . I haven't posted one of these for months . [You know how it is with the elections and such .] But thanks to LoneRanger01 I have been inspired to come up with a new challenge and a new category .
It seems that the US is expected to be moving towards the European way of doing things . Just to remind us of who we are [or used to be] lets remember songs that could NOT have been written in Europe . Thanks and here is my submission . Let's see what the rest of you can come up with ...
Beach Boys- I get Around
OK , I've decided this challenge is too easy . To make it more difficult don't use any song which has the name of a country in it .
There is a whole world of songs out there which fit this category and many of them are not from the US .
Example : "Tan me hide when I've died Clyde ..."
talk about freaaky things,...the song you picked is the first song that came to me,...one of my fav... so I'll justsettle for this one,...lol
Great example of more Americana ! Thanks LR .
and what would America be without this one,....
Oddly enough that music was written in Europe . It is the finale from Rossini's " William Tell Overture" . Go figure ... [I hope this isn't a disapppointment .]
Ahhh, but ask any kid what it is and most will say theLR theme and you can't get much more American than that,.....and the chicks dig the horse too,....lol
Damn kids !
And here is one from Dire Straits :
Sure they're a British band but I think they wrote this one in the US and recorded it here ... maybe .
(song)
"Money for Nothing" is a single by British rock band Dire Straits, taken from their 1985 album Brothers in Arms. It was one of Dire Straits' most successful singles, peaking at number one for three weeks in the United States, and it also reached number one for three weeks on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. In the band's native UK, the song peaked at number four. The recording was notable for its controversial lyrics, groundbreaking music video and cameo appearance by Sting singing the song's falsetto introduction and backing chorus, "I want my MTV." The video was also the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network started on 1 August 1987.[1]
I knew if I tried enough I could come up with another non-Euro song : Land Down Under
I have so many Rich... can I just make a list?
Sure you can make a list but you should also post at least one ... Whaddya say ?
Centerfield-John Fogerty
just cus,.....
Good choice !
Fer sure ...
Here are some pieces of Americana that come to mind .

Tom Pettyand The Heartbreakers - American Girl
Tom Petty- Free Fallin'
A most American song!
There are certain artists that really open up the vistas ...
yes they do... Mary Jane's Last Dance- Tom Petty .
Being born Hoosier, I always enjoyed this song for that reference. But also is aparticularlyhaunting song.
Any song with the word Ventura in it :
America - Ventura Highway (with lyrics)
Sheryl Crow All I Wanna Do
Oops , that last one is Santa Monica not Ventura ...
Ventura Highway
Love that song; top five for me...great Pick!
The Marshall Tucker Band- Can't You See
Soggy Bottom Boys - I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow
Great discussion concerningEurope'srole in the formation of Bluegrass (God's music). Hardened hill folk with Irish,Scottish,English roots...sameinstruments pretty muchtoo, except I think the banjo is actually an African instrument originally.
Really? Not seeing the same one....what is it?
Oh yeah ! Great example of geography at work ...
Neetu ,

My submission: Too Big to Fail by the Austin Lounge Lizards.
Good One Andy!
Awesome Andy ! That's American ... Thanks much .
I'm gonna have to disqualify a bunch of those . My new restriction is you can't have the name of a country in the lyric . It's right there in the article ...
I discovered this band purely by accident. I had family from another state over last year. I'm a jazz guy, but the family members hate jazz, so I played the Internet radio station called "Boot Liquor", which plays a lot of tongue-in-cheek country music. I heard a song called Stupid Texas Song, really liked it, and decided to look up the band. Stupid Texas Song is another great American song.
I was a bit embarrassed to find that the band was local to me and I didn't even know about them (I retired to the Austin area). I found this video on the band's home page, laughed like hell, and ended up downloading a 720p version of it using the Firefox DownloadHelper plugin, and burned it to DVD.
Austin has got some cool stuff goin' on . Keep Austin WEIRD !
Boo! No fair! You just added that!
I'm gonna come back with avengeanceand you will rue the day you messed with the Music Queen!
Good One Bob!
Well Bob , at least you made it ... but if you look at my article you will see that I restricted against songs with a country name in the lyrics . Have you got anything else ?
Yes !
Geez P. ,
Don't you want a little challenge ?
There ya go . That's more like it .
So find another Springsteen song . That one is out of bounds ...
Yeah! No Springsteen??? Come on!
See the previous comment ...
Yes ... songs about the open road are very 'Merican even without the video .
Well ... it's the national anthem ... Frankly I prefer Christen Chenowith's version . Have you heard it ?
That was La Marseillaise ? Could have fooled me ...

How many years can some people exist
before they're allowed to be free
Classic US 60's folk music . Unforgettable ...
Very enjoyable . I know it was written , recorded and performed by Americans but other than that what makes it uniquely non-European ? Can you explain that ? Is the genre somehow only American ? In other words why would it not have been made in Europe ?
Toto,Africa
Really ? That couldn't have been written in Europe ? I know it wasn't but what about it makes that impossible ?
[ [CS&N are musically very American, I think.]]
Well ... maybe . Have there been any European groups that can be compared to them ?
If I were to pick a CSN song to exemplify the American sound I would pick this one :
or especially this one :
See/hear what I mean ?
Classic 60's protest folk ...
Never heard that duet version .. Thanks .
They always struck me as a cross between country and folk ...
I agree . I can't imagine a European woman singing those lyrics or in that style .
I couldn't agree more ...
OK , but he's not European ...
It's been a very long time since I've heard any J. Taylor . Heck while were at it how about this :
I can't forget that one . I was in basic training when that was a big hit . Music like that helped me get through the rough patches ...
Well ... he always had a fantastic voice . Still ... this group's version ...
always captured my attention . It's been fun but I've GOT TO GET TO BED ! Catch'ya tomorrow ...
In reality, most of these songs could have been written in Europe. Africa is about Africa and was written by an American group....WhilePhiladelphia Freedom was probably written in England about Billy Jean King.
[[In reality, most of these songs could have been written in Europe.]]
I don't think you have grasped the concept . I could have worded it better . Would these songs have been written for a European audience ? No . That Toto song ... maybe .
I didn't know about the "CharlieCard" . Its good that the MTA can do the tongue-in-cheek bit so well ...
Well ... so is my first comment .
Very soothing ...
Neetu ,
We are just havin' fun now . If you want to enter a song pick something that would NOT be written for a European audience .
He might be American but I think his music is universal . A song like that could be recorded for an audience in Europe easily .
I don't see that song as being particular to one country . There are pot-heads in every country including Europe .
I'm inclined to agree that style of rap is particular to the US .
Much fun. Okey Dokey. Some Non European toonage.
Rev Peyton and His Big Damn Band: Your Cousin's on Cops

Nice pick. Back atcha:
The Drive By Truckers: Decoration Day
How the heck do you get these vids to show up as an image to click?

Man-o-live ... great selections there Tex .
You know its genuine 'Merican when they bring out the washboard .
It's all country ... updated lyrics but still country .
Wow that Rebel music is amazing ... I had no idea .
Those Drive-By Truckers are actually of commercial quality . What a surprise ...
GE Smith & David Lindley are actually talented . The lyrics didn't do much for me but the music and performance were top notch .
I'm agonna hafta disqualify that Tom Petty number believe it or not . I added a restriction at the end of the article excluding songs with the name of a country in them ... OTW it's toooo easy .
Crooked Fingers was surpringly reminiscent of Springsteen . Was that one of the Boss's songs ?
Thanks for playing . You get the special mention for ... I'm not sure for what . I 'preciate being exposed to material outside of my comfort zone . This is what makes NT such a terrific place . Drop in anytime . I'd like to hear more from you ... maybe an article of your own if you have the time ?
Good choice Mike . I've never heard that version of the old Hank Williams Jr. number . Very prepper ...
Credence wasn't the only band from Louisiana:
back when I was a teenie bopper,...lol
but the singer played on Rawhide....
Or,
Sonny Landreth: Congo Square
Apparently I am obsessed with moosic. Not a bad obsession to wrassle in the long run....
Currently I am in a Roots Rock, Americana, No Depression, phase though I am begininng to get the itch for some electrified meaness. We shall see.
Yeah, The DBT's are bonafide. Very nice fellers as well. They are well worth putting an ear to if you happen to be in that kinda mood.
Yup. That was a Springsteen cover by Crooked Fingers. They are a spin off from the band Archers of Loaf. You might want to hop on the Loaf Train at some point if in the mood for something darker and heavier.
Sorry. Had that final note been a snake it woulda stung me. None the less I was considering the lyrics of the Petty tune more than the title. I guess I get a minus for listening and following directions, a trait which has plagued me for most of my time on this ball o dirt.....
I too am always up for listening to toonage that I normally would ignore or not find on my radar.
And, just because I am, as mentioned earlier, obsessed, here's a few more American Tunes. I am hoping I have the time this evening to go through everyone's suggestions. I am looking forward to it. Anyhow, I'm just going to list these to use less space though I'm thinking that little media button might make em show up as visuals. One of these days I'll give it a go.

I liked that Potliquor number ... a lot .
That Loggins & Messina duo had some really great hits . I guess this is Loggins's claim to a solo career ... Very nice and thanks . OK on 2nd thought I guess Loggins had a good run at a solo career :
Well ... I have to admit that this would NOT have been written for a European audience . This was a piece of the early space age music . There are some great examples of that ...
back atcha:
Tom Waits: Big Joe and Phantom 309 (Red Sovine cover)
The Byrds: Lover of the Bayou
From the songwriter hissef:
Steve Goodman: City of New Orleans

That was not your typical Byrds ! Thanks ...
Thanks Mr. music historian ! I liked this original better than Arlo's version .
Are you saying that anything written by Americans is of interest in Europe ?
Ah ... that Tom Waits does tell a great tale ... every time .
