If you click on the photo you can clearly see :
1] that the dress is sheer up top [there is no danger of "falling out" ]
2] she has a tatoo on her left wrist that says "Jesus" . Draw your own conclusions ...

It does seem strange...I found this on Wikipedia about her early life:

Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in Santa Barbara, California[10] to Keith, a West Coast scenester in the 1960s,[11] and Mary Hudson (ne Perry), an evangelist who grew up in Southern California and had "a tempestuous first marriage in Zimbabwe".[11] Perry has German, Portuguese, Irish, and English ancestry.[12][13] She is the second child of two pastors.[14]

She has an older sister and younger brother.[11] Perry's mother's aunt and uncle were screenwriter Eleanor Perry and director Frank Perry.[11] Perry was incorporated into her parents' ministry[14] and sang in their church between the ages of nine and seventeen.[15] She grew up listening to gospel music,[16] was not allowed to listen to what her mother called "secular music",[15][17] and attended Christian schools and camps.[14]

As a child, Perry learned how to dance in a recreation building in Santa Barbara. She was taught by seasoned dancers and began with swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug.[18] She took her GED after her freshman year at Dos Pueblos High School and decided to leave school in the pursuit of a career in music.[19]

Perry initially started singing "because [she] was at that point in [her] childhood where [she] was copycatting [her] sister and everything she [would do]."[19] Her sister practiced with cassette tapes, while Perry took the tapes herself when her sister was not around. She rehearsed the songs and performed them in front of her parents, who suggested she take vocal coaching. She grabbed the opportunity and began taking lessons at the age of nine and continued until she was sixteen. She later enrolled in at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, and studied Italian opera for a short period of time.[19]

At the age of 15, Perry's singing in church attracted the attention of rock veterans from Nashville, Tennessee, who brought her there to polish her writing skills.[20

I would imagine that many folks' ideal would be more a "girl next door" type-- maybe someone like Jennifer Anniston?

This explainsa lot to me.

I had no idea what she looked like until I just saw these pictures. I've heard her on the radio, and am really unimpressed with her voice AND lyrical skills - if in fact she's doing the writing. Then I hear that her last album broke all kinds of records for sales, and I thought "What the hell? Below average voice? Weak lyrics?"

Well-- IMO there are only two things that make her so popular
