Lyrical Memes
OK all you NTers . Here it is . MY NEXT MUSICAL CHALLENGE . I expect you all know
what a meme is , right ? It is a concept that takes off on the internet [goes viral] .
But before the internet there were memes happening too . Things that just caught fire
and everyone knew about them . They just didn't call them memes . My challenge to
you is to come up with lyrics [pre-internet?] that not only caught fire but are still around echoing in our consciousness .
To start things off , here is the 1st one of these that occurred to me :
"To Know Him Is To Love Him "
Yeah , it is now more of a punchline for standup comics than a meme . But the phrase is still around and that's all that counts . And much to my surprise this was redone by Amy Winehouse before she passed on .
Can you think of a phrase from a song that has become part of the language ? If so
post a comment with the phrase [and a link to the song if you can find one] .
Thanks for your interest & lets see whatcha got ...
OK , here is another one : "The In Crowd" .
Another later version :
I get by with a little help from my friends
I got you babe
You can check in any time you like, but you can never leave
It's my party and I'll cry if I want to.
Great examples P. , all of them .
And now that I think of it , I expect the phrase : "The In Crowd" preceded the song . That would mean it was not a real meme . My bad ...
I'm not too sure. I think if it did, it was just because it became a hot expression of the time.
Stop trying to make smooth over my error . I have accepted it and am moving on .
There are visual memes on the Internet as well. For example " Tourist Guy " (AKA "WTC Guy")
Probably the most recent is "Pepper Spray Cop".
OK.. there was definatly a full moon last night. And it seems to be carrying over to the day.
CRAP something weird just happened. I went to delete Krish's link comment and it took a whole pile of other comments... I think. That whole discussion is gone!
Maybe they were all replies to reply-- so the whole sub-thread was effected?
Anyway, I'm glad you deleted it as Rich said that link had a virus.
That was also weird because I tested the link by clicking on ot after i posted it. After Rich's comment, I scanned the link and several things on that page and it seemed virus free.
Also did a quick scan and full scan on my computer-- it indicated virus free. (If you do get that virus you'd know it-- a lot of really weird stuff happens).
What do you think, Michael? Perrie deleted a comment. Do you think she should be banned from Newstalkers?
(Oh wait-- she's the owner-- she can't be banned! if you ban the owner, the whole site will crash!
Oh yuck yuck....
Hey at least here, Iactuallyown it!
Well, I still haven't heard back from Ning. Maybe they can tell me what happened. I got a weird notice when I deleted the comment, which I haven't seen before. Hummm....Krish????
Mike ,
I put a warning comment under krish's comment about a major virus problem with it . Apparently my comment was deleted with it . It involved a file called vxa.exe . It has f&%^$5^ up my computer big time . I have been in contact with microsoft to try to get it resolved but things are still a mess .
Krish ,
That gdamn virus does not detect with anything I've got but it does screw things up .
It mimics windows defender accurately . Looks like the real thing and that would pop up just like that did in case of a threat . It is a really nasty disguise that gets through too easily .
I got that virus a while back-- or one of its variations.. (And i think its the same one that apparently kpr had recently). At the time i was using Mcafee (and it was up to date). It didn't detect it. But i knew I had something, because computer starting acting weird. (Then I did two more full scans with McAfee-- it still didn't pick it up).
I finally had to pay for tech support to fix it.
here's a thought-- recently Perrie posted a link to a registry cleaning program. She said that might work (by cleaning up files related to the virus in the registry). I will look for it and post the link-- its a free programme, downloads quickly-- its worth a shot.
Rich-- I found Perrie's comment with the link. It wasn't on NT article as i had originally thought but rather it is in a comment on another site. Here's a link to that comment-- its comment 16.13. Click on the link in that comment (its about CCleaner). Quick download, quick install, works real fast too. It may actually disable the virus.
(I would never knowingly post a link with a virus-- but, strangely, when I checked that link, Malwarebytes said it was OK. And-- I did scans of my computer after that-- no virus, and its acting fine. very strange...)
