World's Biggest Insect Found on Tiny Island in NZ (Photo)

Via: the-irascible-harry-krishner • 13 years ago • 9 commentsKnown as the Giant Weta, a cricket-like critter suffering from genetically-weird island gigantism, the super bug was discovered by adventurer Mark Moffett (how cool is that title?) after a two-day trek in the tree tops of the little cousin to Big Barrier Island, presumably.
But that didn't stop Moffett from "adventuring" to the island after rumors of the Giant Weta apparently "bugged" him into action. The result is this stunning picture which shows the arthropod munching happily on a full-sized carrot, its usual staple.
All together now..one.. two..three:
Eew!
Oh I can't wait to show my wife that picture!
;^0
Oooh ooh I want one.
I wonder if I could train it to chase the neighbor's cat?
Holy Crap!
I'm thinking that it was a good thing that rats got to the mainland. Who wants these guys everywhere eating crops? Blahh....
I did have some amazingly large praymantiseslast year. We measured one to be almost 5 inches long. I didn't want to get to close to that guy either. I could clearly see the size of it's chompers!
I hear they're tasty fried-- then you add Hollandaise sauce.
Matt has named it theChernobylLocust.
Sissy !
Sissy. OK, so I did this little experiment with the biggest guy I could find. I held out a bit of chop meat about the size of a dime, and this sucker tilted his head in this strange way, pulled his arms bag and lunged forward full throtle, and snached that meat and almost took the tip of my finger with it.
A little bigger it might have thought my finger looked good.
