MLB suffers compound fracture during Mets - Dodgers game.
The Dodgers wealthy & affluent franchise slid into the Mets franchise at second base and was called out.
Upon replay it was determined the shortstop missed the bag although no conclusive photos have emerged.
The runner who was called out was declared safe and returned to the bag although the runner had failed to touch the bag.
The MLB video broadcast was capped at only one video / angle on the play and was inconclusive.
The runner began his slide at the bag rather than before it.
It was an illegal slide and interference should have been called and both runners declared out preventing the tying run from scoring
Further more the shortstop ran his foot within an inch or less starting across the entire back edge of the bag and it seems likely touched the bag at some exit point based on the shortstops angle to the bag.
At best MLB had inconclusive evidence to support overturning the out call.
Shortstop Ruben Tejada suffered a broken leg on what would have been a clipping penalty in a football game.
David Wright & Kelly Johnson each voiced there displeasure with the call with Wright saying he was unhappy on many levels.
This was a CYA by the review center on behalf of the umpire.
While Utleys slide was likely not intended to hurt Tejada and therefore was not a dirty slide it was none the less an illegal slide begun parallel to the second place bag rather than before it.
Had an illegal slide call been made by the umpire, interference rules would have the runner going to first declared out and the tying run would not have scored and the inning would have ended.
Thus the Mets are 1 & 1 rather than 2 & 0.
