What Have You Read Recently That Has Impressed, Educated Or Moved You ?

We talk so much about social media activity that I think short shrift may given to books, articles or texts people read and enjoy. What books or long articles have you read in the past year or two that really impressed with you the writing, the depth of information, or the point of view? Any category of book or topic. Audio books included.

I read "Five Came Back" , the war years story of five famous Hollywood directors (Frank Capra, John Huston, William Wyler, John Ford, and George Stevens - all A-list directors), who joined the military and served making documentaries promoting the U.S. war effort during WW2. A number of them went into harm's way (Wyler flew with bombing runs over Germany to make the short documentary "Memphis Belle" and was seriously injured).

Utterly fascinating story, if you have any interest in the history of mid 20th century movies, or World war 2.

One chapter each on 50 spiritual classics encompassing all the traditional world faiths and some unconventional ones also.

"50 Spiritual Classics captures the diversity of life journeys that span centuries, continents, spiritual traditions and secular beliefs: from the historical The Book of Chuang Tzu to modern insight from the Kabbalah, from St. Augustine’s Confessions to Eckhart Tolle’s recent The Power of Now, from Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements to Rick Warren’s phenomenon The Purpose-Driven Life. The first and only bite-sized guide to the very best in spiritual writing, this one-of-a-kind collection includes personal diaries and compelling biographies of such diverse figures as Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Black Elk; Eastern philosophers and gurus including Krishnamurti, Yogananda, Chögyam Trungpa and Suzuki; and Western saints and mystics such as St. Francis of Assisi, Herman Hesse and Simone Weil."

I highly recommend this book. It examines the teachings of some of the most spiritual teachers from ancient times until the recent past.
