Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and controlling shareholder of 21st Century Fox and News Corp, is to marry actress-model Jerry Hall.
The pair announced their engagement in a short notice in Tuesday’s Times newspaper, which is owned by News Corp.
It is unclear what implications a marriage — which would be Mr Murdoch’s fourth — will have on the ownership of the companies his family controls. News Corp’s assets span newspaper, print and digital publishing while Fox operates television and film businesses.
Mr Murdoch, 84, and Ms Hall, 59, have made few public appearances but were spotted together at last year’s Rugby World Cup final in London. They also attended Sunday’s Golden Globe awards in Beverly Hills, where The Martian and The Revenant, two films distributed by the Fox studio, were the night’s big winners. The couple were introduced by Penny Fowler, Mr Murdoch’s niece. Ms Hall has four children with former partner, Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger.
In 2013, Mr Murdoch divorced Wendi Deng Murdoch, saying in a court filing that their 14-year marriage “had broken down irretrievably”.
His decision to marry Ms Deng caused tension with his older children from a previous marriage. Then, in 2006, Ms Deng discovered that Chloe and Grace, the two children she had with Mr Murdoch, had not been given voting shares in the company.
The following year Mr Murdoch, whose net worth is estimated at close to $12.4bn, handed each of his six children about $160m worth of non-voting News Corp shares.
Since then, News Corp has separated into two companies: News Corp, which houses the company’s newspaper assets, including the Wall Street Journal in the US and The Sun in the UK, and 21st Century Fox, which houses the entertainment assets.
Lachlan and James Murdoch, two of Mr Murdoch’s adult sons, have taken on more prominent roles at the two companies, part of a gradual transfer of power from Mr Murdoch.
James Murdoch was named chief executive of Fox last summer, succeeding his father, who remains chairman. Lachlan Murdoch, was appointed executive co-chairman, working alongside Rupert.
Apparently, even multi-billionaires need trophies...
At least she's kissing 60 and isn't some 20 something young thing. I guess that has to count for something even if there is still a 25 year difference. My other thought was just "EWWWWWWW"
Sometimes, it is difficult to understand why women willingly jump into the shark tank. But then, the answer can be quite plain: $$$$.
I wish Ms. Hall the best-- she is going to need it, with him.
