Ohio’s original craft brewery, Great Lakes Brewing Company has delighted customers with fresh, award-winning brews and locally sourced cuisine in their historic brewpub since 1988. On the Hunt for Good Eats in Ohio
Everyone has that friend who seemingly knows the coolest spots to visit before anyone else. One night my friends and I searched for a prohibition-era bar. While the drinks were good, the two hours we spent looking for the spot were just as memorable. In fact, we never tell anyone the story about the bar, we just tell the story about our two hour search for it and the feeling of victory when we found it. We were victorious treasure hunters that night. If you don’t happen to know any cool hunters, allow us to suggest Cleveland chef Michael Symon, who gives us his recommendations on where to dine and the up-and-coming restaurants in Ohio.
Chow Down Around Ohio
Balance Grille – Toledo
Balance Grille is an Asian-fusion restaurant that serves snacks, build-a-bowls and seasonal specials. It prides itself on being a “real restaurant, serving real food, fast.” Every ingredient is prepared from whole form, right there in the restaurant. At Balance Grille, the ingredients do the talking.
Bar 145° – Avon, Columbus, Kent, Norwalk and Toledo
With an emphasis on fresh and local ingredients, Bar 145° specializes in gourmet burgers, gastro snacks and shared plates. A selection of more than 40 premium bourbons and inventive bourbon cocktails serve as the perfect pairing to its award-winning menu.
Registry Bistro – Toledo
Chef Erika Rapp’s education at the Culinary Institute of America taught her that food can provide unlimited opportunities, on a plate and in life. This is translated in the historic and chic Registry Bistro, which serves fine dining cuisine without the formality of eras past.

Mabel’s BBQ
Later this year, chef Michael Symon will open Mabel's BBQ, a Cleveland-style barbecue restaurant named after his beloved bullmastiff, Mabel. Inspired by his respect and passion for regional barbecue across the U.S., Symon's goal is to create a style that Clevelanders can call their own.
