Afoot and light-hearted I Climb a Steep Meadow Hillside

Has anyone seen the recent car commercial that begins with the opening lines of poet, Walt Whitman's …

Song of the Open Road

BY WALT WHITMAN

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,

Healthy, free, the world before me,

The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,

Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,

Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,

Strong and content I travel the open road.

… And then the narrator gets in his car and cruises the asphalt highway! Am I the only one who yells at the television?

"Asshole!", I yell … "YOU'RE IN A DAMNED CAR … what's the 'Afoot' thing"?!!!

"The long brown path before me" …  is often an ACTUAL. LONG BROWN PATH which I actually traverse afoot! Usually with a camera.

Below are pictures taken while on a long brown path (while standing on my feet … Afoot!). The day was

mostly cloudy but, in my opinion, seems to have worked well with the subject, but, you tell me if you find

it otherwise.

I cannot format this article properly for some reason. I may try (again) to repost it.

A lovely day to be out and about, on foot!  That poor tree that got "shaved" in the second picture!  Its hairline looks almost like Larry of the 3 stooges!

Glad you got to go out and about and thanks for sharing your musings!  thumbs up

The "Larry" tree is likely a Scarlet Maple … among the first to turn color in the fall, and thus, among the first to shed its leaves.

We used to have a "Larry Tree" at my son's day care.  They peeled it's head, and then cut it down.  We still drive by the day care and mourn the loss of the Larry Tree...  It, too, was a maple, and gorgeous in the fall!

None of ours have really turned yet...  A few isolated brown things and strange yellow things, but the brilliant reds aren't out yet.  I look forward to them!

Every time that I see a path in the forest such as your photos Mac, I think of this.
