"Head Coach Jeff Walz of the U of L Women's Basketball NCAA D1 team tells it like it is when we raise kids in this "everyone gets a trophy no matter what" mentality age and era, and it needs to stop!"
He coaches at a Division I university in one of the top conferences in women's basketball. His sole focus should be on winning, as well as making the young women better people.
But this mindset does not apply to many aspects, not only of basketball, but of life.
With younger kids, even those kids that play basketball , or some other sport, on top AAU and travel teams , the great majority of them will not play past high school, and sometimes they won't even make the high school team. It's not because they didn't try or didn't want to win, it is because the farther you go in these sports the tougher the competition becomes. Everyone can't win. No more than everyone can win at musical chairs. Knowing that, many coaches strive to make the game fun for the kids so they will have good memories of all those hundreds of hours of practice and travel.
