Via: johnrussell • 7 years ago • 5 commentsThere has been a twitter controversy. Who is the most famous alumnus of Gonzaga University (one of the teams in this weekend's "final four" of college basketball), former NBA star John Stockton , who retired in 2003, or entertainer Bing Crosby , who died in 1977 ?
The ESPN talk show hosts Mike and Mike were discussing this during a show this week.
"Kids today don't know who Bing Crosby is" (was) , one of the hosts said. "My two sons are 14 and 16 and never heard of him". He also said his assistant on the show, a young woman (probably in her 20's) said she didnt know who Bing Crosby was either.
Now, John Stockton was a great player in pro basketball. He was an all star ten times and is in the basketball hall of fame.
Bing Crosby is only the most successful recording artist of all time.
Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby, Jr. was an American singer and actor. Crosby's trademark warm bass-baritone voice made him the best-selling recording artist of the 20th century, having sold over one billion records, tapes, compact discs and digital downloads around the world.
According to chart researcher Joel Whitburn , Bing Crosby hit the singles charts 361 times between 1931 and 1965, including 40 number one hits -- by far the most successful recording career of all time. Most of those hits were recorded for Decca Records, subsequently owned by MCA Records.
Time has taken someone like Bing Crosby out of the consciousness of young people today.
It gets everybody.
Everything is transient.
''Everything is transient''
Without a doubt.
The day will even come when people will say "Kim Kardashian who?"
I have always been struck by the end of the movie Patton where he is reminiscing about his exploits in the war and he says "fame is fleeting". Eventually almost every famous person becomes virtually forgotten by the masses.
The day will even come when people will say "Kim Kardashian who?"
That's a day I look forward to!
Everything is transient!
YES, it is. And Gravity always wins...
