The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to her second child, a daughter, who will be the fourth in line to the British throne.

The duchess, the former Kate Middleton, was admitted to St. Marys Hospital in the Paddington district of the capital early this morning, Kensington Palace said on its Twitter feed. The baby, weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces (3.7 kilograms), was safely delivered at 8:34 a.m. with her father Prince William in attendance. The prince was greeted with cheers when he emerged from the hospital this afternoon and told reporters he was very happy, the Press Association reported.

St. Marys is the same hospital where the duchess, 33, gave birth to the couples first baby, Prince George, in July 2013. Williams father, Prince Charles, is the heir apparent to Queen Elizabeth II, who has been monarch since 1952. William and George are next in line.

Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well, the palace said. Members of both families have been informed.

Cameron Delighted

British Prime Minister David Cameron congratulated the couple and said on Twitter he was absolutely delighted. The Archbishop of Canterbury also welcomed the birth.

As with her first child, the duchess is being cared for in the Lindo Wing of St. Marys -- a private medical facility within a hospital thats part of Britains state-funded National Health Service. The private maternity wing charges 5,215 pounds ($7,900) for a standard delivery and the first 24 hours of care.

The announcement comes amid media coverage of the campaign for Britains general election on May 7. The birth of Prince George saw television stations from around the world broadcasting live around the clock from St. Marys.

As in her first pregnancy, the duchess suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, or severe morning sickness. She continued with official royal engagements until late March.

William, 32, started work at the end of last month as an air-ambulance pilot, having given up his role flying Royal Air Force search-and-rescue helicopters in 2013.

I wonder if the Prince's mother's name will figure into the baby's name?
