A Walk In A (Presidential) Rose Garden
I went to Hyde Park, N.Y. for my high school reunion (we'll leave the reunion number off, just let me say, there were a bunch of old farts there-not sure who all those old people were). My lady friend had never been to Hyde Park, so we did the Walkway over the Hudson (a converted 1.3 mile long railroad bridge-in 1974, on our schools Freshman Crew Team, we were on the river when that bridge caught on fire and burned for weeks). If you ever get the chance, please do it. (if you're really interested, click here for info).
After that we went to the Vanderbilt Estate but skipped the mansion tour as it was under complete rehab, so we went to the Roosevelt Estate and did the full tour. We got to go for a walk in the Rose Garden, created by Sara Delano Roosevelt (FDR's Mom), where now FDR and Eleanor are both buried, along with FDR's much loved dog 'Falla' and another family pet.
Surprisingly, some of the roses were still in bloom. I hope you enjoy the pictures. They smelled really good too!
This was perfect timing, as PJ posted her article on stopping and smelling the roses.

I believe my favorite is the 'apricot' colored rose. I hope you enjoy these. I will work on some other pictorial essays from photos I took this weekend.
Great photos Spike and in upstate NY no less.
Our roses are still blooming and probably will for a bit longer which is not unusual for us. Of course I am long way south of you.
Thanks Kavika. I saw a special retrospective in the FDR library that might interest you. Will work on building the photo essay on it.
Sounds good, Spike.
Beautiful as I am a rose garden person. My son graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. They have a beautiful campus. We visited him a few times there and it is a lovely areas.
Glad you had a good time.
I remember when the CIA was St. Peter's Seminary (now I'm really dating myself). My high school best friend went there. His dad was the Chief Financial Officer for the school. My parents used to love to go out to the Escoffiet Room for dinner (5 star at a 2 start price!). I just checked their website, seems that place has been replaced. I grew up 5 miles form there.
I recently visited The Roosevelt National Historical Site at Hyde Park New York. It was all inspiring, interesting and fairly humble. Especially inspiring was President Roosevelt's elevator which he used to manyally raise himself up to the upper floors. My disabled dog was able to enter the visitor's center and the Roosevelt graves but not the house or the museum. The grounds are beautiful. The house is no larger than your average McMansion today though...
I noted the size of the place, though I'd love to have a library like his to relax in! I grew up in Hyde Park and he is 'legendary' there-the work he put into not letting others know of his disability is amazing. Back in a day where the press would respect his privacy and not spew it all over the news-and we wonder why they call them the good old days...... I went to F.D. Roosevelt High School, our elementary school field trips always went to the estate. The place next door? Was the Morgan Estate, that the family donated to the state. The big garage next door to that mansion? My neighbor/best friend/foster brother.....his grandparents were the caretakers-I've actually slept over in the apartment above-there was a great big old Lasalle on blocks in the garage.
I'm glad the weather cooperated during your visit and there were roses that took advantage of the unseasonable warmer October/November weather this year. It's supposed to take a turn this week and drop a good number of degrees so your trip fell within a perfect window.
Roses are beautiful. I'm partial to yellow or pale colored roses but my favorite flowers are the buttercup and daisy.
Great pictures!
We left and it was cloudy-by the time we got to Albany, it was raining, then storming, she had to go one to Ohio last night and it took an extra hour. Heavy Rain, lightening, tornado force winds and, of course, idiot drivers......glad it was a nice day also. Legs still feel a little sore form the Walk over the Hudson and the estates tours.
