NBC paid off producer who accused Chris Matthews of harassment, report says

Source

NBC paid thousands of dollars to an assistant producer on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" nearly two decades ago after she brought a sexual harassment complaint against the longtime host, The Daily Caller reported Saturday.

The website, citing two sources, reported that NBC paid the woman $40,000 to settle her claim against Matthews in 1999. An NBC spokesperson told The Daily Caller the network paid a smaller, unspecified amount as part of a severance package.

The woman complained to executives that Matthews, now 71, had made inappropriate comments to her and made inappropriate jokes about her to others.

An MSNBC spokesman told The Daily Caller that Matthews had been slapped with a formal reprimand at the time the woman made her complaint. The website reported that the network decided that the complaints were "inappropriate and juvenile," but were not intended as propositions.

Matthews has hosted "Hardball" on MSNBC since 1997. He also hosted the syndicated "Chris Matthews Show" between 2002 and 2013 and has authored eight books, most recently a biography of Robert Kennedy.

There are problems on both sides of this.  Could be that somebody is money hungry and wants their 15 minutes.  It also adds to the already shitty reputation of NBC to pay and cover for Matthews.

Most likely she had to sign a non disclosure agreement so there was the money but not the 15 minutes.

The woman complained to executives that Matthews, now 71, had made inappropriate comments to her and made inappropriate jokes about her to others.

So....what exactly does this mean? Was they sexually in nature or just bad humor jokes or comments?

Once again this one size fits all slash and burn technique being deployed is getting ridiculous! Sexual harrassmant/assault is one thing, but now we're getting into the inappropriate realm now?

It means that they paid her off rather than have the allegations hit the news, so they must have thought there was some content to it.....

Or.....it was just some regular harassment claim that they paid her for! I remember back when I was in the Marines, a buddy and I was just goofing off during some down time and made some racy, raunchy jokes, well a female heard our jokes and reported us to our Gunny claiming we were harassing her even though she was never in the conversation nor was it directed toward her....We spent the next month in sensitivity classes what god knows what.

so they must have thought there was some content to it.....

Yeah, but could the content be as much as him propositioning her or just saying she looks good in that dress she was wearing (yes, that is considered a form of harassment in most workplaces!)

So if a man says to a woman at work "I'd like to fuck the shit out of you", do you maybe, perhaps, think that it is an INAPPOPRIATE comment?????

But do you think a man saying "You look good in that dress" be in the same category as a man saying "I'd like to fuck the shit out of you"? because I have seen settlements won because juries and judges have decided they are the same

......but seeing as though Matthews did not say anything like that nor has it allegedly been reported that his comments were not propositions....once again this slash and burn one size fits all technique is getting a little ridiculous don't you think?

yes very well could be the same and usually means the same.

if a women said it, it is a compliment. a man saying it is only a sexual comment.  most men do not give a shit about women's fashion.

Really?! So how did you come across that scientific hypothesis?

most men do not give a shit about women's fashion.

They don't? Huh? I guess male fashion designers are a figments of the imagination, same with men just like how a dress looks on someone? Or how about this maybe the man is giving a woman a compliment and that's all it is........but to categorize it as SEXUAL and taking offense just for a simple comment is the reason why we have a hard time believing actual victims of sexual harassment/assault

Either way, this "coming out" moments some of these "accusers" are feeling decades later is total bullshit. Either come out right away or don't come out at all..

So is Franken, Weinstein, and Conyers......but those claims sexual harassment/assault, this subject is different what exactly did he do for it to be deemed inappropriate? Like I said I've seen companies lose sexual harassment lawsuits all because someone was asked out on a date, or was complimented on how good they look. I've seen depositions on lawsuit filings because people had private conversations and because someone didn't agree or was offended by that private conversation that person was deemed inappropriate. What I see on this seed is a lot of people jumping to conclusions about what Matthews did trying to once again start this one size fits all tactic, either through ignorance or partisanship. And for the record I would say the same thing about the Republican politician (forget the name) that was forced to resign all because he asked two female employees if they would be willing to child surrogates for him and his wife.

As my father used to say "If someone fires the first shot, blast em back with both barrels."  Another incident comes to mind.  There was this one guy who was always bugging me at work about going out and I just wasn't interested.  One day I was eating lunch, a tuna fish sandwich, when he started in again.  I passed him my sandwich and told him to take a whiff.  He did and I told him that was the closest he was going to ever get.  The three others guys there completely cracked up.  I never had a further problem with him after that.

Actually it does......do you say the same thing when cops resign from police departments even though they reports claim they were justified in inappropriate actions? Do you automatically think they're guilty or do you buy the excuse that they did it for the good of the department and community?

And the next contestant:

SAN FRANCISCO — A prominent U.S. appeals court judge announced his retirement Monday days after women alleged he subjected them to inappropriate sexual conduct or comments.

Judge Alex Kozinski of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a statement that a battle over the accusations would not be good for the judiciary. He said he'll step down, effective immediately.

The Washington Post reported last week that at least 15 women made allegations against Kozinski that go back decades. The allegations include inappropriate touching and lewd comments.

Kozinski said while speaking in a "candid way" with male and female law clerks, "I may not have been mindful enough of the special challenges and pressures that women face in the workplace," the statement said. "It grieves me to learn that I caused any of my clerks to feel uncomfortable; this was never my intent. For this I sincerely apologize."

Leah Litman, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine, told the Post that the judge talked about having just had sex and pinched her side and leg at a restaurant the night before they appeared together on a panel at her school in July.

Christine Miller, a retired U.S. Court of Federal Claims judge, said Kozinski grabbed her breasts during a car ride in 1986 after a legal community function in the Baltimore area. She said it came after she declined his offer to go to a motel and have sex.

A lawyer who was not identified said Kozinski approached her when she was alone at a legal event in Los Angeles in 2008 and kissed her on the lips and gave her a bear hug with no warning.

The newspaper said the woman's husband confirmed the incident and said the couple didn't think they could do anything because of the judge's position.

The Post reported last week that six former clerks or more junior staff members accused Kozinski of inappropriate behavior, including showing them pornography.

Kozinski, 67, was chief judge of the 9th Circuit, the largest federal appeals court circuit in the country, from 2007 to 2014. He is known for his irreverent opinions, and his clerks often win prestigious clerkships at the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 9th Circuit has opened a misconduct inquiry that was transferred Friday to the Judicial Council of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.

Kozinski's retirement leaves five seats open on the 9th Circuit, with two more judges already having announced their intention to retire next year. That gives President Donald Trump potentially seven seats to fill on the largest and most liberal appeals court in the country.

Even if all those judgeships are filled, however, Democratic appointees still will maintain a healthy majority on the court with 17 of the 29 seats.
