My Best Memory of Yogi
Growing up in New York in the'60swas a special place if you were a baseball fan. The Yankees were the greatest dynasty, and the upstart Mets were shocking the baseball world with their new brand of baseball, focusing on pitching and defense. I knew very few people who liked both teams, and if you loved one, you usually hated the other. That's sports for ya.
So naturally, there was quite a hullabaloo when Yogi Berra, Hall of Famer, lifetime Yankee, was named the manager of the dreaded NY Mets. Everyone loved Yogi, but the METS??!! The METS??!! Ughhhh!! I didn't love the Mets after that, but I did not hold them in as great a level of contempt as I had before Yogi decided to manage.
Anyway, I'll cut to the story.
The Mets had just come back from an 8 game road trip that they had split, 4-4. He was being interviewed on TV. The first question one of the reporters asked was how he felt about the road trip they had just finished.
Yogi replied, "It could've easily gone the other way".
Couldn't believe my eyes/ears. I had actually witnessed a "Yogi-ism".
Rest in peace, Yogi.
May his memory be a blessing.
Ha! Yup, that sounds like Yogi.
Peace to you and yours Yogi, you are already missed.
He will be missed.
Great athlete.
Greater man.
E.
RIP, to a great player and a greater man.
His memory IS a blessing... From way back when baseball was great!
Great story Jon. No one could say it like Yogi. BTW, I am a Mets fan, so your loss was our gain. Actually, Yogi belonged to everyone, which is why he is so loved.
He will be very missed.
