From Steak 'n Shake to tornado warnings, there are plenty of things that can only be found in the Midwest. Here are 25 quirks only a true Midwesterner can appreciate.
I recognize curds, one pot meals, Chex mix, bean bag toss boards, deep dish, Chicago, cheeseheads and Steak & Shake. I prefer Five Guys myself (better fries).
A Chicago-style hot dog , Chicago Dog , or Chicago Red Hot is an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun, originating from the city of Chicago, Illinois . The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard , chopped white onions , bright green sweet pickle relish , a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt . The complete assembly of a Chicago hot dog is said to be "dragged through the garden" due to the many toppings. The method for cooking the hot dog itself varies depending on the vendor's preference. Most often they are steamed, water-simmered, or less often grilled over charcoal (in which case they are referred to as "char-dogs").
The canonical recipe does not include ketchup , and there is a widely shared, strong opinion among many Chicagoans and aficionados that ketchup is unacceptable. A number of Chicago hot dog vendors do not offer ketchup as a condiment.
As a fellow WNY'er, you are right.....Buffalo Wild Wings? Carpetbaggers.
Good Guys Pizza in N.T., Buzzy's in the falls, Pizza Oven and Lock City in Lockport........did you know they opened a Dominos Store on Robinson/Dysinger in Lockport? Good Luck, LOL. I tried the Pizza Sub at Tony's in Sanborn-it was awesome.
Sahlens used to make a smoked polish sausage-better than any Kielbasa I ever had. Thier hot dogs on the grill are outstanding!
Not exactly sure what it all means but it is representative of the more urban parts of the midwest.

I'm not sure these foods are unique to the midwest. The deep dish maybe and the Chicago style hot dog. I don't think the others are though.
What's a Chicago style hot dog?? If it's anything like a Chicago pizza, might be an interesting treat.

All beef hot dog, steamed, on a poppyseed bun. Topped with mustard, relish, chopped onion, tomato, pickle , sport peppers and celery salt.
I usually eat three at a time.
I really no longer understand people who have hot dogs topped only with mustard.
Speaking of Chicago and pizza - Gino's East is the best. They have a sausage pizza - the sausage patty is very thin and covers the whole pizza. YUM!
Wow - like going to a buffet just for a dog, eh? Cool - gonna hafta try one - or six
Saw one of those advertised on Ted's Hot Dog page here in WNY yesterday? Coincidence or fate telling me I need to try one?
Buffalo and WNY
Beef on weck
Chicken wings (Buffalo Wild Wings does not count)
Pizza Locally Owned (Chains suck in comparison)
Fish frys
Sahlen's and Wardynski Hot Dogs
Sponge Candy (Watson's is the best)
