Feds dont honor military service

Veterans that serve in the military are forced to buy back there time in service. This should be a outrage. Any person that works for the federal government like a irs agent can transfer to say the post office and there time transfers. A veteran has to pay for the years served to count as retirement . Why do we put the defenders of freedom last

Welcome GB,

Good question. I think it's partly because they demand so little and our government only notices the squeaky wheel

I served for 23 years in the Army.  Exactly how am I supposed to buy back my time?

Paula - you can "buy-back" your time if your apply for Fed/State employment.  The HR office will give you the necessary forms.

I "bought-back" 10 years of active as an Officer - no allowance for Reserve time - in '93 and it cost me $5K.

As a Veteran, I received the 5 points for service.  If you have a disability, you can/will receive 10 points - which help in gaining seniority and some protection from RIF's.

Until this seed, I didn't even know that the buy back thing existed.

Ghostly Bear, this is a good subject, but I think we need more information on this subject. I'm not familiar with it at all.

He's talking about mil vets

as opposed to mil retirees,

competing for other governments jobs.

I am not sure exactly what you are talking about .. when I worked for the USDA/NRCS I got jumped for promotion by a vet fresh out of the military .. he jumped me due to seniority, his 6 years in the Army transferred / counted toward his pay and rank in the USDA..

P.s... for the record, I had NO issue with this … for the first time I had a straight answer for not getting the job - the feds are a bitch to work for!

It used to be fairly cheap to buy your time.  15 years ago you could still buy 4 years for a few grand.  Now it will set you back about 15k per year. Give or take.  Just not worth it anymore unless you REALLY want that retirement sooner.

As a federal employee, you can buy back your military time (not terribly expensive and they do it over time) to count those years for your federal job-which moves you up the leave gathering chain faster (4 hours per pay period from years 1-5, 6 hours per pay period for years 6-14, 8 hours per pay period form 15 years on).  You can apply it towards retirement, but if you come in now retiremenrt system is called FERS and it doesn't do much outside of allowing use of the Thrift Savings Program (TSP).  The old system before FERS was, I believe, CRS (PJ might know-not sure how many years of Civil Service she has).

As a retiree from the Air Force with 21+ years of service, it made no sense for me to try to buy back those years of service, especially since I already draw that pension.  Is it fair?  I don't know, Vets already get preferential treatment in the hiring system-minimum of 5 points.  Regardless, the system is what it is.

Yea.  I should say I'm not in a typical federal job.  It's complicated.  I actually fall under the state retirement.

I only did 6 years myself in the AF.  I loved the guys when I was in... but I looked at the military pension va civilian sector WITH additional IRAs and 457 I could do and it was a better route to go as a civilian for me.  What was your job in the AF? Firefighting for me.  Got out and did a few years in Iraq contracting before going job now

I finally looked up buy back years, as I was not understanding the whole thing .. and I am only correcting you, because I know you would do the same for me... it is CSRS

thanks guys and gals for your input . Its mainly for people that haven't retired but want to work in the federal government. We have put this in our local news papers hoping to get some traction and get the buy back removed and a easy transfer of credits put in place
