Cuomo: America 'was never that great'

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said at an event on Wednesday that America "was never that great," drawing an audible response from the crowd.

Cuomo made the comments in reference to President Trump's popular "make America great again" slogan.

"We're not gonna make America great again," Cuomo said at the event, where he signed anti sex-trafficking bills into law. "It was never that great."

"We have not reached greatness," he continued. "We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.""We will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone," he said. "And every woman's full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution. When that happens, this nation is going to be taken even higher."

Cuomo's comments were quickly met with pushback by Republican gubernatorial hopeful Marc Molinaro.

"America, with its imperfections, has always been great," Molinaro said in a statement. "Our people, our principles, and our promises have been a beacon light to the world for 242 years and counting."

"Mr. Cuomo owes the nation an apology," Molinaro continued. "He should be ashamed of himself."

Cuomo's office sought to clarify his comments in a statement later Wednesday afternoon.

"The Governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential," press secretary Dani Lever said.

"When the President speaks about making America great again - going back in time - he ignores the pain so many endured and that we suffered from slavery, discrimination, segregation, sexism and marginalized women's contributions."

Cuomo has long been an outspoken critic of the president and often makes public remarks criticizing the White House. Amid a primary with Cynthia Nixon, an activist and former television star, Cuomo has consistently framed himself as an anti-Trump Democrat fighting for the future of the party.

Cuomo led Nixon 2-to-1 in a recent poll of likely Democratic primary voters.

Funny, someone that rode his dad's coattails and has lived his privileged life off the sweat of the taxpayers saying idiot stuff like this.  As a member of the Air Force, I have lived in a couple of 3rd world countries (and I think everyone should, as it gives you perspective on what 'not great' really looks like).

This clown is a bully and rules like a prince, because the voting block called 'NYC' keeps re-electing him (funny, last election, he only won in urban centers, with high social support needs).

The funny thing is this guy thinks he's presidential material - becuase he's supposed to fulfill the legacy his daddy never completed.  Seems like he thinks he should be the 'Capo De Tutti Capo' of the United States.  I certianly hope he never gets elected.......

This is about Cuomo's comments, not about your hatred for the sitting President.  Keep that thought in mind while commenting.

I haven't really followed Gov Cuomo but his son on CNN get's on my nerves!  If I have to hear him say "my friend" one more time I'm going to slit.......oopsie, I digress.

I also have worked and traveled to different countries.  I've also traveled to many States within the United States.

Gov Cuomo clearly stepped all over the point he was trying to make.  It was a stupid political faux pas but that's about it.  For those of us who can speak about this truthfully, it's easy these days to look around us and see how "not great" America has become.  The country has been slipping further into despair for quite awhile.  Our education system sucks (as is evident by the outcome of the last election - hehehehe), our infrastructure is falling apart and so outdated, the country places more value on guns than lives, the environment is being attacked from all sides.

My father always told me that unless you are willing to acknowledge that something is broken then it can never be fixed.  America is broken.

Still the greatest country to live in, pursue life and happiness, etc., etc.  His brother is Andy's minime.

As President of a statewide not-for-profit (I was a few years back), our lobbyist, who interned for his father and grew up with him, told us before the first election, it would basically be a coronation, then Andy would act like a fiscal conservative, becuase you can't be president unless you fix New York first and acting as a liberal you simply cannot fix New York.  Andy did exactly that.  And he will run for President. I don't believe he has fixed New York.  There are scandals conencted tot he Buffalo Billion (money steered to companies of his cronies, arrests, convctions of which he says he has no knowledge, though he is a micro manager to the Nh degree)

Early on (Andy is known as a workaholic that doesn't sleep much) he would call people in the middle of the night looking foinfo, reports, data, et.  One agency head told him (at like2 in the morning) that I'll get it for you first thing in the morning.....to which Andy responded, don't bother, you're fired.  He expects, much like a king, that if he is working, eveyone else shuold be, regardless of hour.

I agree, he did step on his.....schwantz.....with that statement, though he seems to think he can say or do anything because he is the boy king.

Oh, they're brothers?!  hahahahaha - just confirms that I don't follow the dude.  Thanks for the clarification.

I'm sorry but I don't feel that way these days.  I'm depressed and defeated.  Our country and it's citizens have lost our human decency and our moral authority.

Yeah, they are brothers and work out of Papa Mario's Play book.

To give you an idea.....Andy says he is doing everythign he can for New York State.  Decided to re-name the Throg's Neck Bridge after his daddy, for the dedication, he decided he wante dto drive Franklin Roosevelt's car (when he was governor of New York) that was donated tot he state.  So, the Cuomo administratin sent the car to Wayne Carrini at F40 Motorsports to get the car running and driving.  F40 Motrosports is in Conneticut.  Way to help out busiensses in New York, Andy!  Hypocrite.

Playing devils advocate.

Couldn't that be considered capitalism?  Also, where was the expertise and was it more cost effective to send the car outside of NY?

Your point is well taken though.  If you claim you want to uplift NY then have the work done in NY.  At minimum it looks disingenuous to those on the outside.

I'm sure there are garages in New York that can work on LaSalle's (I believe that's what it is).  Plus, you have to ship the car to Conneticut, while relatively close, I'm thinking that garages in New York are likely closer.

I wish people who believed that could play some sort of lottery where they could randomly be reborn in at any time or place in history. Of course, American America haters would never risk that. Maybe a few days as a peasant in 16th century Germany would give them a new found appreciation for America.

If he feels that way about America, he must really have a low opinion of the other countries, even those who are very good countries.

"The top five countries with the most Nobel laureates are all western nations - with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Sweden topping the rankings for the best minds in peace, literature, science and economics.  The United States has had the most Nobel Prize winners, with 336 winners overall"

Well there are really only 335 who deserved them.

Nah, not funny at all.  The greedy old pricks (gop) wouldn't spend a penny on anyone except themselves and possibly a hooker or their mistress.
