study  published in the journal  Neuropsychologia  has shown that religious fundamentalism is, in part, the result of a functional impairment in a brain region known as the prefrontal cortex. The findings suggest that damage to particular areas of the prefrontal cortex indirectly promotes religious fundamentalism by diminishing cognitive flexibility and openness—a psychology term that describes a personality trait which involves dimensions like curiosity, creativity, and open-mindedness.

Religious beliefs can be thought of as socially transmitted mental representations that consist of supernatural events and entities assumed to be real. Religious beliefs differ from empirical beliefs, which are based on how the world appears to be and are updated as new evidence accumulates or when new theories with better predictive power emerge. On the other hand, religious beliefs are not usually updated in response to new evidence or scientific explanations, and are therefore strongly associated with conservatism. They are fixed and rigid, which helps promote predictability and coherence to the rules of society among individuals within the group.

You have to be pretty dumb, or brain dead to take the shit written in most religious texts seriously. Star Wars is more plausible.

How brain damaged do you have to be to fall for Rawstory recycling clickbait?

Let's not be too hasty here.  This seems pretty feasible.  jrSmiley_68_smiley_image.png

Or, biased "scientists" are putting their own political spin on things. This story has been out for a while and debunked already. I wouldn't call myself a religious fundamentalist at all, but this is another example of the media taking a limited study to places it shouldn't, and all for the sake of a headline.

No, Scientists Did Not Link Brain Damage to Christian 'Fundamentalism'

Here's what happened: Neuropsychologists at Northwestern University studied almost 150 Vietnam War veterans, many of whom had suffered brain damage, and discovered that those with brain injuries were less open to new and different religious beliefs.

And even according the scientist heading this research, such specific yet sweeping conclusions are unjustified.

"For this study, we recruited Vietnam Veterans with and without brain injuries," Grafman told PsyPost. "They were all male American combat veterans. This limits the generalization to other groups of people including women, people from other countries, and people who come from cultures with different primary religious beliefs."

. . .

Brain injury does not, however, predispose someone to think in a certain way. An atheist would not suddenly become a fundamentalist Christian as a result of traumatic brain injury, for example.

Right on the money!  Thank you. Just because it is said to be a reputable publication does not mean they cannot be wrong...

It's probably the fourth or fifth time it's been posted here. Clickbait sites like Rawstory that pander to those with sub optimal intelligence recycle it every few months because it becomes shiny and new to their "readers"  after a few days.  Here's a couple of previous times the same site ran the same story.

How sad to get news from a site that thinks so little of it's readers..
