A tough-talking, pro-Trump sheriff implores Obama and Bush: ‘America needs your help’

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

If a mad scientist wanted to create an archetype of a thick mustachioed, cocksure conservative Midwestern lawman in a laboratory, the result would probably look like Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

Jones has taunted undocumented immigrants with billboard warnings that pointed toward his Ohio jail. And after thousands of letters poured in pleading Jones not to vote for Donald Trump in the electoral college, he turned them into kindling in videos posted to social media. “You see I got a lot of letters to burn,” Jones said in one video as he smoked a cigar. “I’m going to be burning letters all night.”

Subscribe to the Post Most newsletter: Today’s most popular stories on The Washington Post

Now, Jones wants to be a uniter in the feverishly partisan social climate he has arguably intensified with his own actions.

“I’m just a lil' ol' sheriff in Ohio,” he told The Washington Post by phone Wednesday. “But I’m outspoken.”

In a letter delivered to Barack Obama and George W. Bush and posted online Tuesday, Jones called for the former presidents to tour the country and help repair civil discourse amid political and social turmoil, which he said was emblematic in the government shutdown and fierce rhetoric over immigration.

“Recent news reports and events occurring around the country are widely creating civil unrest among the American citizens. The extreme divide between our Democrats and Republican parties needs to be rectified,” Jones wrote.

He continued: “The country needs the two of you to show the American people that our political parties can get along even if opinions differ. We are a great nation with a history of great leaders. The people need to hear from you. America needs your help.”

It is an unusual plea from an elected official who has made no qualms about defending his controversial positions and diving into charged social issues while enforcing the law in a county that voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton by a nearly 2-to-1 margin in 2016.

But Jones has said relations between Americans of all political stripes have been more hostile than he has ever seen. And he is concerned the breakdown will spur more violence if no one steps up to lead a movement of respectful dialogue and civic progress.

“I’m a supporter of the current president. But this is a bigger picture,” he said. “We need infrastructure, bridges, roads. Wars all over the world, and our military is about spent. We need to negotiate and fix health care. We need security on the border.”

And that, Jones said, is where Obama and Bush could step in as what he described as “respected leaders” in their parties. Trump can’t lead it himself, he explained, necessitating the need for outside voices to bridge social and political divides.

“It’s a mess, and we need help,” Jones said.

Jones has asked others to carry the torch of civility while zeroing in on the causes of civil decay. He pointed to partisan attacks in Washington, what he called flagrant media bias, the slow drip of the investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and the bombardment of dreary news as rock hammers chipping away at American social strength.

Yet he is an elected official who responded to anti-Trump letters, some of which he described as threatening, by launching a social media trolling effort complete with a Trump-Pence sign. And his charged immigration billboards provoked tension in Hispanic communities in his county, the New York Times reported in 2006.

So what about him, as a public servant and leader? Has writing his letter to the former presidents prompted any soul searching for how he might have also fanned the flames of social discord?

Not exactly, Jones said. “I’m okay with my history.”

I hope Bush and Obama tell him that they have a letter they'll be burning tonight.

hold whoever voted for Trump to be ridiculed and scorned forever?

I think it fades eventually, just ask those who voted for Nixon.

If it was just a mistake, if it was just a matter of "Hey, I didn't know who he was before I voted for him", then electing the dumbest, most callous, self absorbed, narcissistic, self admitted sexual predator in American history President would be completely forgivable. But the fact is, if you were old enough to vote in 2016, you were old enough to see what was right in front of your eyes, a sad sack of worthless man baby with no government experience and a history of running businesses into bankruptcy. Sure, I've heard many times how that was somehow better than the straw man Hillary Clinton that Russia and poorly educated conservative pundits created for their half witted listeners, but any real inspection of the candidates showed that the image those partisan douche bags presented of Hillary Clinton was a total farce. There was no pizza parlor sex ring, no assassination of Seth Rich, no evidence of any hacked emails from her private email server, no wrongdoing in regards to Benghazi, no conspiracy in regards to uranium one, no major health problems, it was all smoke and mirrors. Which is exactly what they did with Trump as well but with the opposite intent, obfuscating his ties to Russian oligarchs, paying off porn stars so they didn't talk about Trumps many illicit affairs and how often he cheated on his wives, trying to rig media polls in his favor, asking Russia to illegal hack US email servers, his campaign staff conspiring with Russia asking for their help getting dirt on Hillary in exchange for easing sanctions and removing the Magnitsky act, all of that was called "fake news" and "all lies" by the sleazy conservative pundits.

So should those who bought into the lies and are continuing to defend the indefensible joke in the oval office be ridiculed and scorned forever? Yes, yes they should, and they should be glad the majority of Americans don't rise up and prosecute them all as co-conspirators with Russia and strip them of their citizenship and send them off to Siberia where I'm sure Putin will welcome them as fellow fascists.

Can we put to bed at least the notion that Democrats are all about extending an olive branch

What would you think of a large political party where 40% of their members said they thought Al Qaeda was a friend and ally? How would you attempt to repair the relationship with those who actively sought Al Qaeda's help, those who either supported or at least looked the other way as they spent their own resources, $1.25 million a month, in a targeted social media campaign where they were pretending to be Americans and starting ridiculous rumors about an opposing candidate that they, as violent terrorists, didn't want elected?

If you've thought about it for a minute, and really examined how you'd feel, then you can just take that feeling and assume that's how most patriotic Americans feel about Russia and what their attack on American independence. The current Russian government is far worse than Al Qaeda ever was. The Putin regime has assassinated journalists, political opponents, dissenters and anyone who dared get on Putin's enemies list. He's stuffed ballot boxes and defrauded his own people and now defrauded the American people. Putin is a vile authoritarian dictator who threw his weight behind Trump in 2016 and was undoubtedly the straw that broke the majority of Americas back and helped get the most inexperienced sack of garbage elected.

“President Putin, did you want President Trump to win the election and did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?”

“Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the U.S.–Russia relationship back to normal.” - Putin

"40% of Republicans say Russia is an ally or friendly, up from 22% in 2014"

It seems that Republicans do know that Russia helped them win in 2016 and they thank Russia for it with nearly double the support for Russia than they had in 2014. Republicans thanked the piece of garbage authoritarian for their dear Leaders win and we all must suffer their disloyalty to America that, some reasonably argue, borders on treason. To me there is no difference between Al Qaeda helping Trump win and Putin helping Trump win, they're both terrorists and sworn enemies of western democracy. How some Republicans can justify their support for global terrorist truly boggles the mind.

A lack of physical evidence which is often the case in sexual assault cases as well as expired statute of limitations. But if you think all of those women are lying but Trump, who's a proven liar himself, you obviously have a partisan agenda and no amount of evidence will ever get you to see the truth about the slime in the oval office.

I get a kick out of the Trump defenders now, who try to convince everyone that he still has things under control.

I would like any of them to tell us HOW Trump is going to get his mojo back among the many people who are starting to see the truth about him. When you are a con man and a fraud, you don't come back from that. Once people see you misled them, in almost all cases they are lost to you for good.

The Democrats who voted for Trump in 2016 , and the independents, are not going to vote for him again. He has been caught as a fraud.

I think you answered your own question.

The adds were targeted. With the help of Manafort, I would say.

The bigger questions should be, why do some turn a blind eye to outside influence and what could be done about it.

Ah. You didn't read any further, I suppose, because that question was immediately followed by this one in the same post:

Not that Russia did something, but the actual effect it supposedly had?

Now, to most people, that would mean I am asking for proof of any effect Russian ads had.

Do you have any of that?

Did people change their minds on who to vote for because of the ads, or is all just guesswork?

sorry for your luck - look up history sometime - there was a government shutdown during Obama's Presidency... there was a Republican opposition and lack of olive branch and they certainly had "no desire for anything but power and to punish those who voted against them" -- but yes, you can keep claiming they are lies (cue your turn to now claim you weren't claiming those were lies, backflips are fun to watch, certainly more entertaining than an adult admitting they made a mistake or misread something)

You can shove your petty insults, JR. I personally feel sorry for people incapable or unwilling to see a difference between voters and candidates.

I don't know if you voted for trump or not, although you certainly have defended him. If you voted for Donald Trump you voted for someone who was being sued, at the time,  by hundreds of people who said Trump defrauded them through his "Trump University". Regular people, some of which used their life savings to join Trump University on the basis of fraudulent advertising, some of which was done by Trump himself.  If you voted for Trump you voted for someone who had perpetrated a racist conspiracy theory called birtherism. Trump even said he had sent detectives to Hawaii who were reporting back "incredible" things about Obama's birth. It was all a lie by Trump. If you voted for Trump you voted for someone who was on audio tape telling an entertainment reporter that he grabbed the pussies of women he had just met, or barely knew.

All of this, and much more,  was known and in the public prior to election day 2016.

There is no sympathy for Trump voters.

Impasse

An impasse may be called in a thread during a heated discussion by making a comment that contains one and only one word: ‘IMPASSE’.  An impasse call ends the thread for everyone - no other comments are allowed by anyone on the thread.   If a member abuses impasse as a means to not engage with specific individuals, the impasse will not be honored by the moderators.   [updated on 1/19/19 for clarity. Only a fool can believe that the shutdown is one-sided.

Well, let's do the math.

Republican controlled house and the Republican controlled Senate, along with the minority party in both, passed a continuing resolution to fund the government just before Christmas. Trump rejected it. Then the Democrat controlled house passed a clean CR to fund the government after taking over January 3rd. Senate Republicans refused to even put the bill up for vote even though they had just passed the same thing two weeks before because the divider in chief said he'd veto it. The Democrats continue to make offers for increased border security, they simply refuse to give in to Trumps demand for a "wall" which has been proven ineffective, too expensive to build and too expensive to run and would be a huge waste of tax payer money.

So yes, this is an entirely one sided shut down which can be blamed on Trump and the moronic Fox News pundits who apparently control him.

I suppose the one thing we haven't thought about in regards to the wall is the potential for it to become a tourist attraction like the great wall of China did. Even China, with an already built wall, recognize it's nothing more than a tourist attraction, it's not used to stop anything anymore, they know that would be stupid to assume it could block anything in the 21st century. If the Trump wall is built, eventually there will be tours given of the boondoggle project where Americans can visit the largest unrepaired breaches and holes or the most impressive tunnels built under it. There will be big dusty signs every few hundred miles that say "Come See the Biggest Waste of Taxpayer Money since Reagans Star Wars Defense project".

Like I stated earlier, only a fool would think this is all one sided.

Apparently you're only able to repeat rhetorical statements devoid of any facts or substance. I explained why it's not only reasonable but obvious to lay the blame exactly where the commander in-competent said it should be laid, “I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck. … I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it".

Anyone who has to do near impossible contortions of logic to get around Trumps statement and actions is obviously the real fool. There is no doubt in the majority of American minds that Trump is solely to blame.

"New poll shows a vast majority of Americans blame President Trump for shutdown"

A minority voted him in, and a minority still support him. The Trump troupe of sycophant logic contortionists are the only ones able to stand the most dishonest, worst Presidents in American history. The majority of Americans have never supported him and never will and know he is obviously to blame for the current state of America, its shutdown and its growing divide. I honestly wouldn't be surprised one bit if after the 2020 election, when he loses by the largest margin in history, that he'll seek asylum in Russia to try and escape prosecution.

He won the election according to the very same rules that applied to his opponents and predecessors.

No contortions, just facts,. Either accept them or not, not my circus, not my monkeys.

The mere fact remains that govt. can open any time either party desires it to. Now, you may choose to ignore or forget that fact, but it still a simple fact, undeniable to anyone looking.

Okay, so blame Trump. No big deal. Doesn't change anything, either.

The majority of Americans have never supported him and never will and know he is obviously to blame for the current state of America, its shutdown and its growing divide.

The majority of Americans don't have to support him. It is not some sort of freaking requirement. The left made it quite clear well before inauguration day that they weren't going to ever accept the results of the election. Didn't some old Democrats say that was a threat to democracy? Or did they mean it only if Trump lost and refused to accept the results--as if there would be one thing he could have done about it?

I said nothing about accepting the results. I pointed out that he does NOT represent the majority of Americans. And while we are a representative Democratic Republic, the majority will eventually get its way by getting rid of those who continue to obstruct the majorities will. The majority want freedom, justice and equality for all regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith or lack there of and staunchly refuse a moronic boondoggle border wall that would do next to nothing to stop border crossings and cost tax payers billions we simply can't afford.

"The mere fact remains that govt. can open any time either party desires it to. Now, you may choose to ignore or forget that fact, but it still a simple fact, undeniable to anyone looking"

Both Democrats and Republicans agreed on a compromise bill and passed it just before Christmas. Donald Trump is the one who stuck his foot out and tripped up the process after listening to Ann Coulter and other sycophant bigots on Fox Noise who convinced Trump he'll definitely lose in 2020 if he doesn't demand his wall now. They are really the ones to blame here.

And where was this crisis before? We've gone 240 years without a southern border wall, and have fluctuated in regards to immigration from seeing over 1 million border crossings annual to now some of the lowest numbers in the last half century. But of course Republican xenophobes want to convince everyone there's a brown tsunami coming that can't be stopped by anything but a boondoggle border wall. There is no crisis, we don't need more wall, the money can be better spent on actual better border security and those wanting to steal the effective border security money and spend it on a stupid ignorant piece of trash wall that present less than a 4 hour delay to anyone trying to breach it are either so racist they just love the idea of a wall between they and the "brown" people, or they are so ignorant they believed the lies of the racists and are shaking in their scaredy boots practically pissing themselves in fear of the Mexican boogey man they've been warned about.

Didn't say you did. But even you can't deny that people were claiming Trump wasn't their President even before his inauguration.

I pointed out that he does NOT represent the majority of Americans.

As President, he certainly does represent us all. Just like Obama did, Bush did, Clinton did, etc., etc..

And while we are a representative Democracy, the majorities will eventually get its way by getting rid of those who continue to obstruct the majorities will. So win some election sand change what you don't like. We pay for all sorts of things we supposedly can't afford, and have been doing so for a very long time. Did you think we can afford to be over $20 trillion in debt? What is another $5.7 billion in the face of that? Do you think we can afford Medicare for all? Or free college tuition?

And where was this crisis before? We've gone 240 years without a southern border wall, and have fluctuated in regards to immigration from seeing over 1 million border crossings annual to now some of the lowest numbers in the last half century. I know, I know--anyone to the right of Bernie Sanders or wanting a more secure border must be a fucking xenophobe. I call bullshit on that false statement.

A wall seems to work pretty well for Israel. For some other countries, too. Why do you think so many countries have put walls or barriers up?

even you can't deny that people were claiming Trump wasn't their President even before his inauguration.

What those people likely meant, as was often iterated, is that Trump didn't represent their values or the ideals they believe define America as the shining city on a hill. So when you hear people say "Trumps not my President" they aren't saying "Trump isn't the President" which is what many Republicans inferred they were saying as if they were rejecting the process and proclaiming anarchy like some of those dumb ass sovereign citizens did while Obama was President.

"As President, he certainly does represent us all. Just like Obama did, Bush did, Clinton did, etc., etc.."

Again, your tone deaf literal reading of the word "represent" is flawed.

Represent: verb - 1. be entitled or appointed to act or speak for (someone), especially in an official capacity. 2. constitute; amount to. "this figure represents eleven percent of the company's total sales"

What I mean, and what I think most others who've said the same thing, is that Donald Trump does not in ANY way "amount to" my principles, my morals, my idea of justice and equality. He does not "represent" who I am and what I believe in. In fact, he doesn't "represent" who the majority are and what they believe in. He represents them in name only, and for most he has brought nothing but shame when he does represent us in his official capacity. Watching him practically bend over and kiss Putin's feet in Helsinki was so embarrassing for any patriotic Americans watching.

"So win some election sand change what you don't like."

We did and the whiny Republicans unable to get their wall after being in power for two years are already complaining about the new Democrat majority in the house.

"anyone to the right of Bernie Sanders or wanting a more secure border must be a fucking xenophobe."

Not at all, there are many Republicans who don't want a stupid wall, and neither do most of the ranchers along the border. That's a total bullshit narrative pushed by gutless Republicans who have to lie to get their base to follow them.

“Trump has done some good things with immigration, but he’s 100 percent wrong about the wall ,” said Dob Cunningham, 83, a lifelong rancher and retired Border Patrol agent who owns hundreds of acres abutting the border in Quemado, north of Eagle Pass. “I haven’t found anybody — and I know people from Nogales [Arizona] to Brownsville — who wants that wall.”

"Statewide, 61 percent of Texans oppose building a wall , while 35 percent support it and 4 percent don’t know or declined to answer"

"Standing 6 feet tall, Kelly Glenn-Kimbro, a rancher and hunting guide, can see easily over the low-slung fence that separates her family’s 22,000-acre ranch from Mexico. “ I don’t care what they build. They’ll climb it or they’ll go under it ,” Ms. Kimbro said while taking a break from hunting Javelina, an animal that resembles a wild boar. “ No matter what they build on the border, it isn’t going to stop all traffic .”

"A wall seems to work pretty well for Israel. For some other countries, too. Why do you think so many countries have put walls or barriers up?"

Yeah, the Israel wall seems to work so well, except for the seemingly constant back and forth violence, rocket attacks, besides having to man almost the entire wall like a fucking prison. Yeah, that's what we need in America. /s

Donald Trump literally wants America to believe that the most urgent issue in the United States, by far, is illegal immigration across the Mexican border. He was willing to stop the US government in it's tracks until he got the funding to build a "wall" separating the United States from Mexico. He is willing to see Americans miss paying their rent or mortgage, run short of money to pay for day care or school fees for their children, and perhaps even run short of food, in order to get funding for this "wall".

The majority of Americans do not feel illegal immigration is an emergency situation in the United States. Poll after poll shows this. But because Trump "won the election" in 2016, in a razor thin way while losing the popular vote by 3 million votes, everyone is supposed to give him hallelujahs over his grandiose plans. That is not the way it works, particularly with someone as unfit as Trump clearly is.

There is no reason whatsoever that American people should accept having someone this horribly unfit in our highest office.

"I know all my weakling enemies are fascinated by the "fake news" of any Russian collusion, No collusion, but everyone really needs to focus on the wave of rapists and MS13 coming to rape your wives... yes, I's looking at you white Christians, the rapists are coming for the white women so you better get ready, support me and I'll build a wall and make those dirty, rapin', drug runnin' Mexicans pay for it..."

"Hey, look over there, more Trump campaign ties to Russian operatives and oligarchs... most of the Steele dossier has been verified..."

"Hey! You, stop looking over there, that's just "fake new", keep your eyes over here on the real problem, brown people raping your women and taking your jobs...!"

"But several of your staff have been caught in lies, many have plead guilty or been convicted of numerous crimes, and more than half of the cabinet appointments have either resigned or are under investigation for all manner of government abuse..."

"No! No collusion! And even if there was collusion's not illegal, all my best lawyers tell me that, its not illegal... sure, there were some lawyers who told me it was illegal, but I fired those backstabbers..."

"What about the dozen Russian operatives who've been indicted for meddling in our election..."

"No collusion!"

"And what about the on air admissions of obstruction of justice with the Comey firing..."

"Nobody liked that guy, not even Democrats, he royally screwed the people I hate most and helped me win the election, so I had to fire that guy, cause Democrats wanted me to..."

"And what about the evidence coming out that the Trump foundation was being illegally used for campaign expenses and pay offs?"

"Not me, wasn't me, never had anything to do with that, that was all Eric..."

"And the Trump tower meeting with Veselnitskaya?"

"Again, also Eric, that boys got a lot to pay for, never liked him, totally weak just like my old fixer Michael Cohen, another blabbermouth weakling..."

"Cohen has tapes of you talking about the payments to porn stars to keep them quiet during a national election, which, if those funds weren't disclosed or came from other sources like the National Enquirer then they are clear campaign fund violations which are a federal crime, not a fine..."

"Wasn't me, I know nothingk..! I know nothingk..!"

"Okay Sergeant Schwartz... we all believe you.../s"...
