Valerie Huber’s New Role at HHS Could Bring Abstinence-Only Agenda to Global Policy
Huber spearheaded the rebranding of abstinence-only sex-ed as “sexual risk avoidance”—and then brought that language into government health policy.

Abstinence-only proponent Valerie Huber will move to a new position in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Global Affairs, worrying reproductive health advocates and experts who believe she could push her agenda into the global arena.

Huber’s new role as the Office of Global Affairs’ senior policy advisor,   first reported by   Politico ,   was confirmed   by HHS in a tweet last week. The office,   according to its website , “is the diplomatic voice of the Department of Health and Human Services—we foster critical global relationships, coordinate international engagement across HHS and the U.S. government, and provide leadership and expertise in global health diplomacy and policy to contribute to a safer, healthier world.”

She previously served as senior policy advisor for the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH). An unnamed department official told   Politico  that Huber is “expected to strip references to sexual and reproductive health as well as sex education from the agency’s global health documents,”and advocates say that move would have widespread repercussions.

Only republicans/conservatives, religious fantatics would think that Abstinence-only is successful

My head is spinning.

We have a president who has admitted to affairs and his own personal Vietnam was avoiding STD's.

I. Just. Can't.

It is a fact that this nonsense doesn't work. Colorado has been very successful in reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions by providing free and open access to effective birth control and teaching explicit sex education. "Just say no" didn't work for drug/alcohol abuse and it doesn't work for sex education.  I hate simpletons, especially in public office.

I thought that I recogniozed her name,

Huber’s appointment raises red flags. She has a background advocating for abstinence-only programs, which have proven to be ineffective and even dangerous. She also has a questionable record as a manager. According to a report by the  Daily Beast , Huber was found guilty of “neglect of duty” before resigning from her position overseeing abstinence-only education for the state of Ohio in 2007. She then formed the National Abstinence Educators Association, later known as Ascend, a national lobbying arm for abstinence-only education. There, she launched a campaign to rebrand abstinence-only programs as “sexual risk avoidance,” a term now embedded in the TPPP grant application process. “Valerie Huber is out-of-touch with the reality of women’s health needs, spending nearly two-decades promoting abstinence-only, anti-contraception programs,” Mary Alice Carter, executive director of Equity Forward, in a statement. “She has no place leading the first HHS overhaul of strategy related to public health in decades.”

Religious conservatives have no place in public service when they seek to push a dangerous agenda.

Valerie Huber is a dangerous choice for such an important job within the Department of Health and Human Services, a department dedicated to the health and well-being of the public. Her history of pushing anti-LGBTQ propaganda in schools is despicable and disqualifying.

Ascend, the organization of which Huber is at the helm, pushes inaccurate, dangerous and irresponsible information about LGBT students. According to one document produced by Ascend, educators are discouraged from affirming a transgender student’s gender identity. We know for a fact that this leads to isolation, harassment and violence against transgender students, and in many cases to suicide.

As demonstrated by her record, Huber is just the latest addition to Trump administration’s roster of science-denialists. By continuing to promote moralistic abstinence-only approaches to sexual health, Huber cares more about promoting her own religious views rather than advancing public health. Study after study shows us that honest sex education that is rooted in science and free of stigma creates the best outcomes for young people and public health.

It must be a really slow down at the car lot. Trump's Recession has already started with the US auto industry so Ford, especially, cannot harly even giveaway cars anymore and is losing money hand over fist. They may not make it. Dealerships are already doing layoffs butt on the rightwinger's counter article in support of Roger Stone they have all been reduced to discussing Michelle Obama's penis. I guess conspiring with Russia to defraud American voters is a big joke for that crowd. Bless their misguided olde hearts...

It is only going to get worse for Ford and GM. Chrysler exists only as a nameplate.

I can't think of a car sold by the 3 American automakers that I would ever buy since they stopped selling cars. I hate SUVs and I have about use for a truck as I do for a an RV.  When the price of gas goes up again people will want smaller efficient cars and the American automakers won't have anything that buyers want, just as what happened in 2007/08 when the price of gas hit $5.00.

I don't want a 3-ton 3-row SUV that is more like a motorized living room than a car. I am driving a VW Jetta for that very reason.

Since I live 3 miles out on a gravel road, my 4X4 Toyota Tacoma reg. cab is perfect with the BFG KO2s. The 4 cylinder engine delivers plenty of power and torque while being miserly on fuel. The perfect vehicle.

Oh a auto made by a company that fudges emissions and contributes to killing Earth.

Nice choice.

BTW the resale on Volkswagen since the emission fraud is awful.

I'm not looking to sell. I'd buy a TDi if they sell them in the US again.,

A lot of people want or need a truck because of where they live or their job. I'm just not one of them.  I'm not suggesting that everyone should drive a Prius or a Volt.

Valerie Huber may be onto something here.  Especially if this policy would be implemented in the American Hemisphere first to prove our American spirit and resolve.   And our patriotism.  With the money saved America can have its Walls everywhere, even in the middle of Mississippi if warranted.

Unfortunately, as with most conservative agendas, the 'abstinence only' does not go far enough and totally lacks punishment of any type.  I suggest facial branding, male castration and female mutilation of womanly assets.  These are first offenses.  Second offenses fall under the 'final solution category' and further attention upon those individuals would end at that point.

I propose the United States of America under the direction of Valerie Huber and under the authority of Donald J. Trump ( whom reflects the purity of it all ) declare all sexual activity illegal thereby declaring the United States the first nation in the world to become a haven for the humble and those whose only atonement is for themselves.
