Restaurant owner bans "Make America Great Again" hats, then apologizes
It hasn't happened yet, but if you come to my restaurant wearing a MAGA cap, you aren't getting served.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

A restaurateur in San Mateo, California, has apologized after announcing a ban on anyone wearing "Make America Great Again" hats,  CBS San Francisco reports . J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, a chef and partner at Wursthall Restaurant and Bierhaus, tweeted on Sunday that he wouldn't serve anyone who enters his restaurant with one of President Trump's signature caps.

"It hasn't happened yet, but if you come to my restaurant wearing a MAGA cap, you aren't getting served. Same as if you come in wearing a swastika, white hood, or any other symbol of intolerance and hate," Lopez-Alt tweeted.

Lopez-Alt   posted an apology on Medium Friday

"I want to start by apologizing to my staff and partners at Wursthall. Making a public statement without taking my team's thoughts into consideration was disrespectful and reckless," he wrote. "My goal at Wursthall was for it to be a restaurant where all employees and staff are treated with respect and trust, and by making that public statement without your consent, I failed at that goal . I will work hard to earn back that trust."

The "MAGA" hat ban tweet was taken down later, but it had already sparked both support and criticism. The restaurant's Facebook and Yelp pages were quickly overloaded with negative comments, forcing the social media sites to shut down the comment sections, CBS San Francisco reported.

Have seen the sign many, many times in restaurants "we reserve the right to refuse service to anybody".

I would refuse service to anybody wearing a MAGA hat. It's time to stand up to an idiotic fascist president.

Refusing service is everyone's prerogative, but one should always weigh the legal backlash and consequences before spewing hatred.

The earliest I can remember is the old signs, no shirt no shoes no service.

I am against refusing service. Just dumb imo. I guess I am greedy, would not turn down money.

Unless it was causing a disturbance.

Those signs still exist where I live. I completely understand the no shoes restriction, because it's a health/safety issue.

yeah it is, until one refuses service cause of sexual orientation, race, gender, or any other myriad liberal causes. (to the point of destroying their lives if they feel it necessary) But simply wearing a hat with a political statement makes it alright to refuse service.... (or in the case of some, boot people out of your business)

The hypocrisy never ends for that side...

I think there should be MAGA hats that say, Make America Great Again, as said by Bill Clinton, 1992.

Let's see how many people get thrown out of places with that.

because it's a health/safety issue.

Actually it is not. What is going to be on the bottom of a bare foot that won't be on the bottom of a shoe? Considering that most folk shower or take a bath everyday and nobody ever washes the soles of their shoes or cow shit clogged boots I'm pretty sure that bare feet are much more sanitary.

Broken glass and/or china. If you're OK with your bare feet being cut by those things, feel free to walk barefooted in a restaurant.

So, Lopez-Alt apologized only to his staff and partners. He never issued an apology to Trump supporters for assuming that they would come to his restaurant and do what he preemptively ASSUMED they might do.

The man is playing games! He apologises to his staff for shooting his mouth off, but it seems the ban is still in place. People like him are just one more reason I could never live in San Francisco or anywhere else in California for that matter...

It's odd to me that he apologizes to his staff and partners but doesn't apologize to the people he hatefully targeted:  MAGA hat wearers who never even entered his restaurant. He only issued his lameass "apology" after social media users on Facebook and Yelp lambasted him.

His "apology" was to his staff for making a public statement without talking to them about it first. How is that an apology anyone should care about? He didn't apologize for equating Americans who voted for Trump with Nazis and the Klan. That's the offensive part. No one gives a shit about how he does it.

Exactly. He shot off his despicable anti-Trump TDS mouth and then apologized ONLY to his partners and staff because social media reviews for the restaurant tanked.

[Deleted] that fell for the anti Hillary Russian propaganda.

Hillary has always been a good administrator who Putin hated because she knew him for an evil despot.

Sad that America's executive branch is now totally run by Putin and Fox propaganda.

It seems you've not read the seeded article. If you had, you would have known that Trump voters, the Executive Branch of US federal government, Hillary, Russia, Putin, and Fox News are not the topics of this seed.

Please stay on topic in future comments.

Just explaining the background of this person's decision.

If I owned a business there would be a NO MAGA hat policy.

Used to be a bouncer in a roadhouse where the owner decided that no more bikers would be allowed in wearing their colors. The new policy also had me searching everybody for weapons. I had to turn away Angels and Jokers who were used to coming there. The most dangerous job I ever worked.

Were I still a bouncer, No MAGA hats would be allowed. They tend to breed fights just like other "colors".

Whose fault is that? The person wearing the colors? Or the person who thinks someone else's clothing is a valid reason to fight them?

IMO there are some people that wear the hats just for a reaction.

The phrase itself has broad connotations and can mean many things to many people.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

Maybe...but the person who may have the "reaction" should keep their meltdown to themselves.

The lack of self control is a trademark of many on the left.....and right.

I agree 100 percent. Taking your hat off when entering a restaurant is so 20th century.

Shame.

Just explaining the background of this person's decision.

Are you the owner, or are you merely projecting your own assumptions and anti-Trump feelings as to what he may have been thinking when he made his decision? I feel it is the latter, and nothing more. Thanks for your honesty.

Even if that's true (and I'm sure it is), so what? People can control how they react to the things that offend them. Chances are if people like this restaurant owner didn't make such a fuss over the hats, fewer people would be donning them just for the reaction.

The phrase itself has broad connotations and can mean many things to many people.

Including a message of hope to people for whom the American dream didn't seem to be working the way they thought it would. A lot of people who wear that hat are just hard working people trying to get by, but they have seen forces (from within government and without, foreign and domestic) align against them to thwart their best efforts. Because those people want real changes that might genuinely improve their economic opportunities, they voted for something very different than what had been offered before. These people have been casually and repeatedly cast as racist, hateful, and stupid by the sanctimonious Left.

Parents teach their children manners, and it has nothing to do with what area of the US we live. I didn't grow up in "the wild west", but my parents taught me to remove my hat whenever I entered a building, and I taught the same to my sons.

Because those people want real changes that might genuinely improve their economic opportunities, they voted for something very different than what had been offered before.

And that worked out for them how? Who has been aligned against them?

There has been no significant legislation to change their economic outlook. Actually I have heard people on the right say that people need to pull themselves up and not rely on anyone else. Pull themselves up by their bootstraps as only they can help themselves and improve their lot in life.

Now all the sudden, trump and government are there to make their economic dreams come true? trump is going to take away all these, supposedly, evil people that are getting in their way because they can't meet their economic dreams?

As far as racist, I have shown time and again how hate crimes, crimes against minorities, gay people has gone up every year trump has been in office. One year it went up 17%.

Some people think the slogan is basically a way to take the US back in time, to a place where bigotry reigned supreme.

As I said, not all read the message the same and there are certainly racist, bigoted people that wear the hat with pride.

I find it odd that they got all the comments on the restaurant FB page and Yelp.

Makes me think it was his personal twitter.

Probably a bunch of people that have never even heard of the place. Just the outrage du jour.

I am sure being close to San Francisco, it has not hurt their bottom line.
