Ozone therapy: Uses, benefits, and side effects
Ozone therapy is thought to improve the body's intake and use of oxygen and to activate the immune system. Learn more about the benefits.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Ozone is a colorless gas made up of three oxygen atoms. It is used as an alternative therapy to improve the body's intake and use of oxygen and to activate the immune system.

In medicine, ozone therapy is used to disinfect and treat diseases by limiting the effects of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and protozoa.

In this article, learn about the uses and benefits of ozone therapy, as well as side effects it may have.

What is ozone therapy?

(deleted) Ozone therapy may be applied through injection, and can be used to treat a range of health problems.

Ozone therapy uses ozone, a colorless gas made up of three oxygen atoms.

Some researchers believe that ozone has therapeutic effects and the therapy has been studied and used for over 150 years.

A layer of ozone is found in the earth's stratosphere. Its primary purpose is to protect the earth from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, most of which it absorbs.

In medicine, ozone therapy is used to disinfect and treat conditions by disinfecting the area around them, improving the body's intake and use of oxygen, and activating the immune system.

Using a gas as a medical treatment is unusual, so there are special techniques that are employed. Ozone can also be toxic when inhaled.

Uses

Ozone therapy has been found to be useful in several ways in medicine. When it was first used more than 150 years ago, it was to disinfect and treat diseases.

During the First World War, its application to wounds showed not only its ability to disinfect but also to aid blood flow and produce anti-inflammatory effects.

Later, it was found to be a useful treatment for people with HIV before pharmaceutical medication was available.

Today it is used for treating the following:

  • infected wounds
  • circulatory disorders
  • geriatric disorders
  • macular degeneration
  • viral diseases
  • rheumatism and arthritis
  • cancer
  • SARS
  • AIDS

Although ozone is a gas, developments in technology mean it can be used in several forms and different ways, including:

  • ozonated olive oil applied directly to the body
  • insufflation, a risky therapy where ozone is blown into the rectum
  • ozonated water, which is drunk
  • injections, which are often used in dentistry
  • autohemotherapy, where blood is withdrawn, mixed with ozone, and put back into the bloodstream
  • gas bath or sauna

Benefits

(deleted) Ozoneated water may improve brain function, fight bacteria, and speed up healing.

There have been some promising studies examining how ozone may be beneficial to health by:

  • inactivating bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, yeast, and protozoa
  • stimulating the immune system to speed up healing
  • improving circulation by cleaning the arteries and veins
  • purifying blood and the lymph
  • normalizing hormone and enzyme production
  • having anti-inflammatory properties
  • reducing pain
  • stopping bleeding
  • preventing shock
  • limiting stroke damage
  • reducing cardiac arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm
  • reducing the risk of complications from diabetes
  • improving brain function and memory

Is it safe?

One review reports that the effects of ozone therapy are consistent and safe. However, ozone itself does have dangerous effects.

Exposure to ozone is associated with a significant increase in the risk of death from a respiratory disease, and it has well-known toxic effects on people's lungs when present with nitrogen dioxide in smog.

Even small amounts of ozone can irritate the lungs and throat, resulting in coughing, shortness of breath, and damage to lung tissue that is more susceptible to infections.

There have been cases where ozone therapy has had adverse effects, some of which were severe. These reported side effects include:

  • shortness of breath and other respiratory problems
  • enzyme inactivation
  • swelling of blood vessels
  • poor circulation
  • heart problems
  • increased risk of stroke
  • damage to the eardrum via insufflation of the ear
  • bowel rupture because of insufflation of the rectum
  • causing pulmonary embolism and death when given intravenously

These adverse effects are rare and, under normal circumstances, ozone therapy is considered to be safe.

Side effects

Share on PinterestThose considering ozone therapy should discuss potential risks and benefits with a doctor.

Side effects from ozone therapy can vary depending on what type of treatment someone has undergone.

Ozone should not be inhaled under any circumstance. If it does go into the mouth, nose, or eyes, it can burn and cause coughing, nausea, vomiting, or headaches. More severe exposure can lead to respiratory complications.

However, other treatment methods can have side effects, too, as outlined by the American Center for Biological Medicine.

One of the main side effects people having treatment or therapy can have is known as the Herxheimer reaction. This can make the individual have flu-like symptoms and make them feel worse in the short-term.

If ozone therapy is given, using insufflation via the rectum, the person may experience mild discomfort, cramping, and feeling as if they need to pass gas. These side effects are temporary.

Positive side effects include:

  • nails and hair grow longer and stronger
  • the skin has a more healthy glow
  • a person has more energy
  • falling asleep is easier

There is new research being done on a regular basis into ozone therapy and new developments into its use in medicine.

Anyone who has any questions about ozone therapy and the treatment that is right for them should speak to their doctor.

Where did President Donald Trump mention the world, " ozone " or " ozone therapy " together in Thursday's press briefing ?  Is this another instance of surrogates enabling the boss by attempting to change the narrative? What? Trump is too stupid to use the ozone properly in a press briefing?

Somebody had to scrounge up a distinct and separate methodology to make a "fake" linkage to the Thursday press briefing ridiculous disinfectant and light therapy fantasy story?

You get a prize alright. But not the one you hoped.

Here let's try this:

"So supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it's ultraviolet or just a very powerful light — and I think you said that hasn't been checked because of the testing," Trump said, speaking to Bryan during the briefing. "And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or some other way, and I think you said you're going to test that, too."

f_mo_birx.focal-760x428.jpg

He added: "I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning ? As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that."

He didn't specify the kind of disinfectant.

Yes, "Leader" Trump meant what he said. He actually stated this by way of proof:

"and I think you said that hasn't been checked because of the testing ," Trump said, speaking to Bryan during the briefing. " And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or some other way, and I think you said you're going to test that, too."

Proof positive this was not "off the cuff" remarks. Trump has discussed ultraviolet-or a very powerful light-with BRYAN prior to this briefing.

Slick but no cigar. More proof of why people do not speak in double-talk when the press briefing is formal. My brainy quote*:

You can blow smoke up some of the people all of the time, and blow smoke up all of the people some of the time,
but you can not blow smoke up all of the people all of the time.”

* Modified. Orginal quote attributed to Abe Lincoln.

Court Halts Dallas Health Center From Promoting Ozone Therapy As ‘Only Prevention’ For Coronavirus

However, to date, ozone therapy is not approved by the FDA and is only considered to be an experimental treatment. [3] Here’s why…

Disadvantages of Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is not widely used in the clinical setting. One reason for this is because it has an odd number of atoms, which makes it unstable and unpredictable. Ozone has a capacity to oxidize organic compounds and has well-known toxic effects on the respiratory system when present in smog.

The American Cancer Society reports that “… few rigorous clinical trials of the treatment exist. Those that have been published demonstrated no evidence of effect… Until more positive evidence emerges, ozone therapy should be avoided.” [4]

In an adverse event report issued by the FDA in 2007, a doctor treated a family member who had ovarian cancer with ozone therapy of the blood. The treatment involved removing 250 milliliters (mm) of blood from the patient which was “ozonated” with 250 ml of ozone and then returned to the patient. This procedure was repeated three days in a row, every two weeks for three cycles over a period of one month. After the first set of three treatments, the patient complained of worsening symptoms including a decrease in her urinary output and abdominal discomfort. The doctor attributed these symptoms to the death of cancer cells and reassured the patient that everything was fine. Meanwhile, the patient’s urinary output continued to decrease and the patient steadily declined. After the third set of ozone treatments, the patient awoke from sleep with abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting and had to be admitted to the hospital. After a three week hospital stay during which she was treated for a small bowel obstruction and gastrointestinal bleeding, the patient died. [5]

Conclusion

Ozone is good. Ozone is bad. Ozone is useless when it comes to viral infections. Ozone is an effective antiviral. You only have to do a search on the internet to discover the many contradictory claims about ozone therapy. With so many inconsistent statements, who are you to believe? Because research on ozone has mixed results and ozone therapy is not yet approved by the FDA, it’s best to talk to your doctor before seeking any type of treatment with ozone.

It still doesn't negate the fact that the triggered TDS sufferers have been going nuts because Trump said they should inject them with a disinfectant or something.

And there is a actual procedure that proves they do.

But hey, thanks for looking up your own source to prove that President Trump was correct.  You even proved they have been experimenting with it for coronavirus. Your awesome.

I could be wrong, but I don't think he ever said bleach. The media and the left injected that.

You have to admit that maybe somebody mentioned ozone or some other therapy to him that can use injection as a method of delivery, didn't really know the name or understand it, but did understand that it could "disinfect" the body of COVID.

The negative of this is he didn't understand the concept and should have just let it be until something concrete came out.

The positive is he is trying everything he can to save American lives and to talk about possibilities instead of outright dismissing them, as the media has.....just because....... Trump

He specifically said disinfectant. In common usage:

disinfectant

  noun
dis·in·fec·tant   |   \   ˌdis-in-ˈfek-tənt     \

Definition of   disinfectant

:   an agent that frees from infection especially   :   a chemical that destroys vegetative forms of harmful microorganisms (such as bacteria and fungi) especially on inanimate objects but that may be less effective in destroying spores

In medical usage:

disinfectant

 [ dis″in-fek´tant ]

1.   freeing   from   infection   or   infection-producing   organisms.
2.   an   agent   that   does   this.   Heat   and   certain   other   physical   agents   such   as   live   steam   can   be   disinfectants,   but   in   common   usage   the   term   is   reserved   for   chemical   substances   such   as   mercury bichloride   or   phenol .   Disinfectants   are   usually   applied   to   inanimate   objects   since   they   are   too   strong   to   be   used   on   living   tissues.   Chemical   disinfectants   are   not   always   effective   against   spore-forming   bacteria.

How about being factual. He was referring to bleach and other disinfectants.

I agree, let's be factual.  Here is a bit more of what he actually said after listening to expert Dr. William Bryan explain the research they have been doing with respect to the effects of UV light, heat and humidity on the viability of the virus:

Trump, April 23 : A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that too. Sounds interesting, right? And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute . And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’d be interesting to check that. So that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute . That’s pretty powerful

So he was addressing the disinfecting capabilities of UV light as was presented by Dr. Bryan and how quickly it could kill the virus, in one minute, repeated 3 times.  Nowhere does he mention bleach or other chemicals as the "disinfectant" to which he was referring in the sentences between.  He was talking more likely about something like THIS (See video on this page) , although a prototype and not yet approved of course as a treatment for Covid-19. But you don't often see those last two sentences of what he actually said in any article that claims that the President was suggesting that people inject or ingest dangerous disinfectants like bleach.

The full video of the briefing is HERE , be sure to hear Mr. Bryan's entire presentation prior to President Trump's child-like remarks starting at about the 20 minute mark.  I have found that listening to the entire context, rather than just carefully selected snippets can help one understand what Trump is saying because quite often he is far less than clear.  But in this case, he was clearly NOT referring to bleach and other disinfectants, and he was most certainly not suggesting that anyone should inject or ingest such chemicals.

Having said that, the very real fact remains that all of this speculating with regard to what he said could be avoided if he simply wouldn't ask such questions of his experts in front of a media he knows is counting on him to say something that they can sensationalize.  Zip it and let your experts do the talking would be my advice to the President, were I in a position to offer such advice.

Note that Dr. Bryan states without any sarcasm that 'our labs don't test disinfectants' or words to that effect. To which Trump over the press speaking, says this:

"Not through an injection, we're talking about the cleaning or sterilization of an area. . . maybe it works maybe it does not." Or words to that effect.

Note Trump still does clear up that he is not talking about the inside of the body, thus the mention of "medical doctors with" because it is internal of a body.

Trump wants somebody to look into it. Other wise, why suggest that disinfectants work on the outside of the body.

Then the most bold of lies is issued the following day when Trump says he was talking about disinfecting hands - as if anybody would need him to tell them that. People have been cleansing and disinfecting their hands since the start of this pandemic.

Here is the video of the LIE:

SARCASTIC QUESTION: President Trump Clarifies Injecting Disinfectant

Trump is a practiced liar, but a liar all the same. It is why people won't give him the benefit of the doubt! He does little to deserve it!

My daughter, who dislikes Trump immensely, brought it to my attention. She is a nurse....kinda.  She hypothesized that someone may have mentioned it to him as a treatment and that is what he was referring too.

There is also a technique they are experimenting on where they blast the inside of the ventilator tubes with UV light...Go figure.

But yeah we get the Trump said to drink Bleach hyperbole.

One story says the idea is caca.

the next promises great results in crowded interior spaces.

the truth may be somewhere in between.

Note. I used to use Ultraviolet "therapy" in large marine aquariums and all I could see was the electric bill and the lamp replacement costs.  When I switched to 100% LED lighting I disconnected the UV system and there were no detrimental effects only savings.

Ultraviolet blood therapy has been proven "useful" in 22 week clinical  trials for hepatitis but is still not FDA approved.

Virus victims might not have 22 weeks but the procedure could be ramped up by using dialysis equipment.

Just a thought

That's true. It does. AC companies use the same technique with AC units to eliminate mold in air conditioning systems.

As far as tanks are concerned, I think that if you have good water flow, that by itself will keep down the algae.

It's generally used topically, not injected.  It was tried intravenously as a treatment for HIV, without success.

Ozone had shown promise in in vitro testing. Ozone was seen effective at disinfecting extracorporeal blood samples of HIV; unfortunately for AIDS patients, 03-AHT proved to be an in vivo ineffective treatment[ 14 15 ] [ Table 1 ].

It is NOT used as in injection in dentistry, as far as I can find.  Some dentists use ozonated oils or ozonated water to prevent dry socket or promote healing of incisions and lesions, and some use it to disinfect cavity preps before filling, but those don't require injection.  Another commonly-used medicine has been shown more effective in reducing microbial growth in cavity preps.

Ozone therapy may be applied through injection, and can be used to treat a range of health problems.

I'm sure highly intelligent people don't have to read my article because you know they have been spewing President Trump said to drink bleach all day.

Although ozone is a gas, developments in technology mean it can be used in several forms and different ways, including:
ozonated olive oil applied directly to the body
insufflation, a risky therapy where ozone is blown into the rectum
ozonated water, which is drunk
injections, which are often used in dentistry
autohemotherapy, where blood is withdrawn, mixed with ozone, and put back into the bloodstream
gas bath or sauna

"May be" doesn't mean "generally is".  Most of the uses you have listed are topical.  Well, there's the blowing it up the rectum - that takes dedication.

Generally speaking, when a treatment is supposed to "purify blood and lymph", "normalize hormone and enzyme production", and "clean arteries and veins", one should really start to question the veracity of the information.  They generally accompany pseudoscience, and this source is known for letting pseudoscience pass.

In the seeded article, it specifically states that it is normally used in gaseous form, but can be used in other forms, such as...

"injections, which are often used in dentistry"

I don't see why if something shows promise, there is no reason why, if someone is literally on their death bed, we can't throw the kitchen sink at them.

The problem is the left dismisses everything the president says, so the media refuses to report on the positives of what some of these treatments may give.

Yes, gaseous would be topical, unless one is having it blown up one's rectum, as alluded to in the article jrSmiley_97_smiley_image.gif

It is not used in an injectable form in dentistry.

The whole reason this article was seeded was in response to Trump's wondering whether we could inject a disinfectant into a person.  It was speculated by the seeder that maybe he meant ozone.  And that speculation is all we have to go on for an explanation - somebody saying "Maybe this is what he was talking about."

The problem is the left dismisses everything the president says

The man wanted to nuke hurricanes, and thought a "solid" flu vaccine would prevent Covid-19 infection.  There is ample reason to dismiss his speculations (or what somebody speculates might have been his speculations) about possible medical treatments.  Especially potentially deadly ones.  Leave it to the medical doctors.

I'm a dentist.  Just in case there was something I'd completely missed, I searched dental websites about ozone therapy.  I'd heard of it being used before, but everything I could find was what I'd already been informed of.  It's used topically or as an irrigant, but it's not injected.  It's considered to be an "alternative" treatment.  Reputable dentists use it and say they have good results with it, but that's anecdotal.  Randomized trials support more conventional methods.

The media is doing their job.  There is no reason they should gloss over his gaffes.  Let Fox put a positive spin on it.

The MEDIA was not having a discussion with President D. Trump about "gaseous-injections." That is something that has 'weeded' itself into our discussion. For clarity sake, President Trump asked about 'ultraviolet light and other lights' and disinfectants, whereupon he did not hint at ozone therapy in any recognizable or significant way.

Futhermore, it is not media's responsibility to aid Trump in making sense. It is to report and to clarify beforehand.

Therefore, if you ask a bungling and combative. . .person. . .to elaborate further on a point they are making and said individual sticks to his or her talking points or "narrative statement" - that is what will be used as breaking news, headlines, and material for whatever come after.

If the media would simply flip the way they cover the President, we would all be for the better. They dismiss everything positive he has done for this country, yet go all out stupid when he makes unfounded claims.

The media as an organization is not anybody in particular's friend. Donald Trump became president slamming the media, siccing his rally crowds on the media, and calling out the media any time he liked—rightly or wrongly (mostly, wrongly counted). The surest way to not get bad press is to shut his big fat mouth about subject matter he is not up to date on; stop his obsessive  lying, and end his galling appetite for being the center of this nation's life.

In other words, just do a good job and leave the BS off. But who are we kidding after nearly four years. Trump's voting bloc hired him to talk shit, carry a big stick, and pat his big "fanny" in liberal faces.

Trump's positive economy is under heavy attack by a microbe. The media did not create or position COVID-19 to injury or disrespect President Donald Trump. It is Trump's stupid fault that he has no 'built-in' good will with the larger citizenry. He attacked and disrespected anybody who dared to stand up to his shenanigans: let him get whatever it is he has politically coming to him.

Much like those who voted for Obama did so to those evil racist conservatives for the exact same reason.

As far as the rest, I can agree that he needs to tone it down, let the professionals handle his press briefings, however, the media should tone down the disrespect towards the office. The respectful way to acknowledge that you have been called on by the President is to respond with "Thank you, Mr President". Sometimes, rarely we hear that. Most other times we hear "Yea, uh".

"In other words, just do a good job and leave the BS off"

Can't disagree with this, but it goes both ways.

First of all the "Left" does not dismiss everything ANYBODY says as this discussion alone illustrates.

Second, as to the media against in discussion about what sticks up as questionable, the Negative ("the stupid" "the wrong" "the ignorant") will get its fair share of if not the most airing. In addition, the negative gets full coverage when a lying, manipulative president and his surrogates try to tell reasonable professionals and reasonable citizens they did not hear or read or discern what is explicitly before them.

Lastly, you could spend better quality time telling your boss, Donald Trump, to spend less time talking and more time doing and maybe he would not have had his non-apologetic and sorry behind on the rally route trolling democrats and tossing out conspiracy theories and misleading pronouncements about fake coronavirus hoaxes.

Your problem is your boss, Donald Trump, not me, not NT, and damn sure not the media.

It does go both ways: respect does that it. Trump likes "yes men and women."  I have no concept of how he thought to come to Washington D.C. and dazzle the media into forgetting their journalistic integrity and history.

Respect works both ways. Trump needs to accept that the media is not now or ever will be in need of a single "father figure." If that is not clear enough: translation: Trump can not do what he wants to anybody he wishes while president - he is discovering this as this virus does not 'listen up' well and the media is taking down notes of the activities.

Please do not start inhaling ozone, you will die.

Ozone is safe and effective if used in a controlled method. As a gas ozone will kill you, full stop. In other forms (mostly aqueous) it is very effective as a sanitizer for everything from door handles to vegies, provided it is concentrated in a safe medium.

Only use it if specified by a doctor. [deleted]

Please do not drink or inject it.

That is true. I work with patients with COPD and are on O2. Their O2 levels are set to ensure their levels remain above 92 or 93 percent. Sometimes these patients think they need a higher amount and turn their O2 up several levels above what is limited.

I don't know how many times I have had to educate the dangers of receiving too much oxygen.

Absolutely 110%

I operated a pet shop many years ago and I bred all sorts of finches in addition to my many fresh water breeding projects

and marine aquariums and snakes and mangrove plants and tubs and tubs of live rock.

( lots of loose crickets and moths, lol )

I initially bought one of those ozone creating electronic air fresheners to defeat cigarette smoke and cooking odors but everyone groused about the "smell of lightning".  So I bought an even bigger one which we still use occasionally.

But they really worked great in the pet shop and my breeding shop and around salt water aquariums in defeating that zoo odor.
