Fred Willard, an actor whose career was dotted with innumerable indelible cameos playing genial buffoons in unfortunate roles of authority, has died aged 86.

The news was first broken by Jamie Lee Curtis, the wife of Christopher Guest, in whose mockumentaries – including Best in Show and A Mighty Wind – Willard won a new army of fans.

“How lucky that we all got to enjoy Fred Willard’s gifts,” Curtis   tweeted . “He is with his missed Mary now. Thanks for the deep belly laughs Mr. Willard.” Willard’s wife of 40 years, Mary, died in 2018.

Anyone remember his show "D.C. Follies" from the 1980's?

Wow, didn’t think he was that old.    He was a pretty good looking 86.

RIP Fred .....

Oh dam!

Gonna miss old Willard.  Been a fan boy of his since his "Fernwood 2 Night" days.

RIP and thanks for the laughs.

"Fernwood 2 Night"

That's it, I was trying to remember the tv show he was on, thought it was Soap but it was Fernwood. He was great.

I loved him as Raymond Barone's sister in law's father. He was a hoot.

Cool little tidbit.

My mother taught grade school to the gal who played his wife in that show, Georgia Engel, best known as Georgette in The Mary Tyler Moore show.

Whoopee do I know but a cool little factoid in my family.
