The protest began at the park's Buckingham Fountain, then the crowd moved to the Columbus statue, with some members throwing a rope around it - in an apparent attempt to topple it, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Rioters were heard chanting, "Columbus was a murderer! Columbus was a thief!" the newspaper reported.
As objects flew in the air toward police, some officers were seen hitting some members of the crowd with batons, the Tribune reported.

Thank heaven these protests are peaceful.
It's all just mindless scapegoating. People need to feel victimized for their self esteem, so they invent an oppressor. Columbus is so far removed from our times that the notion he did anything that should outrage anyone is absurd. It's all so hypocritical, too. They want to rage against Columbus for leading white people to America, but they aren't prepared to give it back to the natives and move back to Europe, are they?
And yet more about the peaceful protests:
Good for the cops ...
im sure the mayor will punish them for doing their job and the DA will ensure no “peaceful protester” gets punished for injuring them.
A gang of 50 “protesters” also looted a store on the magnificent mile last night after the riot.
of course, that’s not really newsworthy in Chicago anymore.
And in other parts of the country, yet more "peaceful" demonstrations are occurring:
