CHICAGO (WLS) -- Looting and property damage has been reported throughout downtown Chicago overnight.

The looting continued into early Monday morning and police could not provide details about specific incidents or numbers of arrests.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are scheduled to hold a press conference Monday at 8:00 a.m. to discuss the overnight violence.

Witnesses said the looting appeared to be a coordinated effort with multiple cars dropping off groups of people, who then smash-and-grab merchandise in the store, and take off running in opposite directions before police can respond to each incident.

Gun shots were heard by ABC7's team of journalists near State and Lake early Monday morning as police responded to widespread looting and property damage.

Chicago police confirmed an officer did exchange gunfire with a suspect Monday near Michigan Avenue and Lake Street.

According to police, officers were arresting a suspected looter when a vehicle traveling southbound on Michigan Avenue stopped at Lake Street and fired "several rounds" at the officers.

No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.

Police did return fire but it's unclear if anyone from the vehicle was hit, CPD spokesperson Tom Aherney confirmed in a tweet.

COPA will investigate the shooting.

The CTA suspended bus and train service downtown at the "request of public safety officials," the transit agency said in a tweet. No buses or trains will run in the area bordered by Fullerton and Ashland Avenues and Cermak Road.

This is a city on the brink...

A DA who won't charge violent criminals with felonies, a police force not allowed to police and an incompetent mayor more concerned with swearing at the President and defending rioters then protecting city residents.

What happens to Chicago when businesses can't operate in the magnificent mile?

Similarly, another riot in Portland last night, which is weird since the governor, mayor and progressives on this site said the riots only occurred because fed officials were protecting the federal courthouse.  No feds, yet riots continue day after day after day. ...

The whole argument was bullshit from the start, everyone knew it. Those who made the argument, or backed it up, damn sure knew it. It's a farce. Any and every reason to excuse or justify the riots, or blame them on Trump or cops, will be used.

Federal authorities left the city at the end of July after weeks of violent clashes between them and protesters, and local leaders have hoped for calm after the federal agents withdrew .

More like prayed like hell, so as to justify their bullshit position. Turns out, as we all knew, they will burn the place down, regardless.

I wonder if the rest of the media is covering this "peaceful" protest?

I'm sure the media won't show this

Doesn't really fit the "peaceful protest" narrative

Were they really using an Audi to break the glass on the store? Potential damage to the car was more than what they probably got looting. Of course like someone in the comments suggested- it was probably stolen so they didn't care.

Guess they were taking some of the "free shit" that Democrats keep promising them.

The Leftwing Media will say the crowd was just innocent bystanders and the Audi was driven by the Racist Umbrella Man who was trying to start a race war by provoking the crowd to riot.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot:  “What occurred in our downtown and surrounding communities was abject criminal behavior,” she said. “This was straight up felony criminal conduct.”

“This was not an organized protest, this was an incident of pure criminality,” said Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown in a Monday briefing, noting that the police had uncovered multiple social-media posts urging looters to converge on downtown in a caravan of cars.

Funny how social media outlets allowed posts urging violence. There is an article on NT today about limiting certain kinds of speech. If there would be anyplace to begin it would be leftists urging people to gather at a certain location in order to riot. I'll bet if somebody like a David Duke tried that, it would have been taken down immediately.

She's starting to realize her support of the rioters and demonization of the police has taken control of the city from her. While she builds walls around beaches, the city is eating itself.

How does it go - "reality has struck!"  And when you allow these violent thugs "an inch, they take a mile!"

Beyond the riots, Mayor Lightfoot has to face the facts on Chicago experiencing a surge in shootings, which are up roughly 50% year-to-date compared with the same period of 2019.

"She called upon court officials and the state’s attorney to make sure people who are, or who will be arrested, are “held accountable.”

She can, and should blame the DA Kim Foxx who's made rioting consequence free in Chicago. Her problem is that she endorsed Foxx's reelection.  She can't blame Foxx for implementing her favored policies.

There's no better place for a criminal to commit a crime with an illegal gun than in Foxx's Chicago, which is why the Feds had to be called into actually prosecute gun crimes. Remember that the next time Democrats demand "gun control."

Yup, they got away with it last time, so why not go out and loot again?

Their creative actions have touched my heart! It really makes ya think about your white privilege, systemic racism, and how evil police are. Ya know? I don't know about everyone else, but I really think this is going to change things for the better, amiright?

Even her Democratic   Alderman are starting to get how  incompetent she is and the need for federal help:

Brian Hopkins, an alderman who represents parts of the downtown area, blasted Lightfoot in a statement to CWBChicago Monday night.

“Our city was devastated by widespread looting and rioting for which our mayor seemed totally unprepared,” he said.

He also accused Lightfoot of offering “nothing but rhetoric and blame,” just like she did after similar riots in May.

He demanded she come up with a “safety plan that will protect all neighborhoods and small business owners.”

Anything short of that and “I am strongly in favor of asking for federal assistance,” Hopkins said.

“Literally, the future of Chicago hangs in the balance, I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that,” he said. “If this continues, how can Chicago survive? What will be left downtown after Water Tower Place gets boarded up

and the for-sale signs go up on all the condos near Michigan Avenue? People who live around there have had their sense of safety badly shaken. This is our tax base, by the way. We count on tax revenue from this area of

the city to fund all number of other programs we count on.”

Chicago's success has been built on a thriving downtown and northside  business and cultural area that is largely insulated from the war zone that is the south and west sides.  Once that barrier is gone, so is the city.

And Black Lives Matter held a rally to support looting

Corporations, who  just got looted, will continue to give them money.  It's quite a racket.
