Poll: Biden maintains 10-point national lead over Trump

Former Vice President Joe Biden maintains a 10-point lead over President Donald Trump less than three months from November's general election, a poll out Tuesday shows.

Biden leads the president 51 percent to 41 percent among registered voters nationwide, according to the Monmouth University survey, a slight tightening of the race since late June, with Biden ticking down a percentage point and Trump rising 2 points.

The new poll comes as the former vice president is expected imminently to announce his running mate.

The Monmouth survey found that 4 percent of those polled are still undecided in their support, while 2 percent back Libertarian Jo Jorgensen and 1 percent back the Green Party's Howie Hawkins.

While the new poll indicates that Trump's summer slump may be reversing course, it still gives Biden a sizable national lead heading into the presidential nominating conventions later this month. Democrats will hold their virtual convention next week, with Republicans scheduled to gather remotely the week after. Presidential candidates have historically seen bumps in their poll numbers after their party's nominating convention, but it's unclear whether this year's online events will produce a similar uptick.

There are other signs of stabilization in the race, which has seemingly tipped in Biden's favor thanks in large part to voters' dissatisfaction with Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Fully half of voters surveyed still say they are "not at all likely" to support Trump, unchanged from June, compared with 40 percent who say the same of Biden. And Biden holds a slight edge among those polled who said they are certain to vote for him, with 39 percent saying so compared with 35 percent for Trump, also roughly the same as in late June.

The number of respondents who said they hold unfavorable views of Biden rose 3 points since June, while the number of those polled who held similarly unfavorable views of the president fell by a point. The number of respondents with favorable views of the president climbed 2 points, to 40 percent, but still remained underwater on the question, with 54 percent of those polled responding that they hold unfavorable views of the president.

The Monmouth University poll was conducted by phone from Aug. 6 to 10 among 868 adults in the United States, with results based on 785 registered voters. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Trump cannot win the Electoral College losing by 10%.

As I have proven that your statement is untrue, repeatedly, why do you insist on telling a falsehood?

It is possible to lose the popular vote by a margin of greater than 10% and still win the election.

It is just simple math, dude!

Assuming, of course, that you know how Presidents are elected in this country.

I am just amazed he insists on telling the lie over and over and over again, especially when it keeps being proven he is wrong.

And while your link is informative, if one doesn't read it, it does no good for them.

Yesterday or the day before he declared it a statistically impossible feat to win the Presidency while losing the popular vote by 10%.

When basic math skills are questionable at best, it may be too much to expect him to backtrack now.

So according to that link in 2020 Trump would have to win:

Hawaii (Trump lost by 32 points in 2016)

Rhode Island (Trump lost by 16 points)

Maine (Trump lost by 5 points)

District of Columbia (Trump lost by a whopping 87 points)

New Mexico (Trump lost by 8 points)

Oregon (Trump lost by 11 points)

Colorado (Trump lost by 5 points)

New Jersey (Trump lost by 14 points)

Delaware (Trump lost by 12 points)

And those numbers were against Hillary who was admittedly a poor choice with tons of baggage.

So keep dreaming all ye sycophants of dishonest Donald. There's a reason casino's love gamblers who previously won big, they know the false feeling of invincibility will make them an easy mark. "Don't tell me the odds! I'm on a hot streak! I can't lose!"..."Don't tell us the polls! We won against the odds once so odds don't matter anymore! We're on a hot streak! We can't lose!"...

They are betting that since they won on an inside straight last time they will somehow draw an inside royal straight flush this time. Odd? Nil!

You declaring it a statistical impossibility of anyone winning while losing the popular vote by 10% is what is extremely odd.

Thinking that Trump taking the Electoral College while losing the popular vote by 45% to 55% is a win or even possible is what's odd!

I know math is hard, so some just call it impossible when it is simply numbers.

it has been proven to you time and time again that someone could win the election while losing the popular vote by 10-15% or maybe even a little more.

Whether you choose to accept facts and numbers is up to you, but I for one simply refuse to engage in such idiotic thinking.

Factually, you're correct, it is technically possible to win the electoral vote while losing the popular vote by more than 10%.

However, looking at the current makeup of the States and their past voting patterns, to pull off such a feat would require nothing short of a miracle. Now I get it, many Trump supporters believe in miracles so they are still hopeful. The rest of us are merely reading the signs for a Trump repeat which all point to the corner of "Nophuc King Way" and "In Your Dreams Blvd".

Strawman. The only claim I have made is that it is possible for a candidate to win while losing the popular vote by 10%.

I am sure that many Democrats are now believers in miracles after Hillary managed to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory! Probably many of them felt Trump has absolutely no path to 270, either.

This is coming from the DC insider news organization that usually gets it all wrong?

Do you have a reputable source saying differently?

No? Excellent! Even Fox News has Trump down 8%.
