And If Life Belongs Only To The Strong Alfie
When I looked at my newsfeed this morning in it was a video of 92 year old Burt Bacharach being interviewed by the Washington Post
In the clip the interviewer asks Bacharach about song writing, how he does it, the mechanics of it and so forth, and Bacharach uses the song Alfie as an example. He says that in this case the lyric, by frequent Bacharach writing partner Hal David , was entirely created before Bacharach wrote the music.
Burt Bacharach has said that out of the many songs he wrote and had hits with, Alfie is his favorite song.
Although it is a very pretty melody, I have a feeling that the song is Bacharach's favorite because of the tenuous but life affirming lyrics.
It struck me this morning that it is a song that resonates strongly in 2020 as we face the uncertainty of this election, and the nature of our leader .
What's it all about
Alfie
Is it just for the moment we live
What's it all about
When you sort it out
Alfie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind
And if only fools are kind
Alfie
Then I guess
It is wise to be cruel
And if life belongs
Only to the strong
Alfie
What will you lend on
An old golden rule
As sure as I believe
There's a heaven above
Alfie
I know there's something much more
Something even non-believers
Can believe in
I believe in love
Alfie
Without true love you just exist
Alfie
Until you find the love you've missed
You're nothing
Alfie
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you'll find love any day
Alfie
Alfie
