NYT editorial calls Trump the 'greatest threat to American democracy since World War II'
"He has subsumed the public interest to the profitability of his business and political interests. He has shown a breathtaking disregard for the lives and liberties of Americans. He is a man unworthy of the office he holds," the editorial board wrote.

The New York Times editorial board on Friday called President Trump the greatest threat to American democracy since World War II," while encouraging voters to "end our national crisis" in voting him out of office.

"Trump's ruinous tenure already has gravely damaged the United States at home and around the world. He has abused the power of his office and denied the legitimacy of his political opponents, shattering the norms that have bound the nation together for generations," the editorial board said. "He has subsumed the public interest to the profitability of his business and political interests. He has shown a breathtaking disregard for the lives and liberties of Americans. He is a man unworthy of the office he holds," the editorial board wrote.

"The editorial board does not lightly indict a duly elected president," it continued. "During Mr. Trump's term, we have called out his racism and his xenophobia. We have critiqued his vandalism of the postwar consensus, a system of alliances and relationships around the globe that cost a great many lives to establish and maintain," the editorial board continued. "We have, again and again, deplored his divisive rhetoric and his malicious attacks on fellow Americans."

"Now, in this moment of peril, it falls to the American people — even those who would prefer a Republican president — to preserve, protect and defend the United States by voting," the board concluded.

The New York Times and President Trump have traded rhetorical blows ever since the former real estate mogul jumped into the political arena. In 2016, the editorial board called Trump "the worst nominee put forward by a major party in modern American history" in its endorsement of then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

The Times has not endorsed a Republican nominee for president in the last 16 elections, dating back to 1956.

Trump has repeatedly referred to the New York Times as "failing" and "fake news" primarily on social media.

So now the Fake News @nytimes is tracing the CoronaVirus origins back to Europe, NOT China. This is a first! I wonder what the Failing New York Times got for this one? Are there any NAMED sources? They were recently thrown out of China like dogs, and obviously want back in. Sad!

The Failing New York Times (it will pass away when I leave office in 6 years), and others of the Fake News Media, keep writing phony stories about how I didn't use many banks because they didn't want to do business with me. WRONG! It is because I didn't need money. Very old

There are 54 daily newspaper endorsements so far on this wikipedia list

51 for Joe Biden and 2 for Donald Trump .  ( 1 was for neither).

Thats 94% of the nation's newspapers for Biden and 4% for Trump.

Now some of you may want to say so what they endorsed Clinton in 2016 and she lost.

Yes, but these newspapers have now seen Trump as president for four years, AND HE CHANGED NO ONE'S MIND.   These are not all Democratic papers, most of them call themselves "independent" but Trump was not able to convince any of them that he did a good job in his first term. That fact speaks for itself.

. . . making their failure to do so this time pretty unremarkable.

But, the Times never called a Republican a threat on a par with Hitler and the goddamned Nazis before!

I don't have access to all of the New York Times archives, but every Republican president and leading candidate I can think of, goin back at least 30 years, has been compared to Hitler or the Nazis by somebody in the press. Also, not remarkable.

Here's the thing that knocks me out about this. The reaction.

The reaction is not what it should be, i.e. "what a stupid take" or "how obviously partisan; the Times isn't even trying to look objective anymore."

No, the reaction is that readers turn off their brains and say: "Oooo the New York Times said it, so it must be true."

Are you trying to favorably compare Trump to George W. Bush? and George HW Bush ? Those are the only two other Republican presidents of the past 30 years.

With all you have seen Trump do and say over these past four years you still make excuses for him.  It's mind boggling.

Newspaper editorials , the NYT or any other paper, are the most well thought out things they publish.

Actually the vast majority who aren't Trumpsters find the NYT to be spot on.

It's quite obvious to most thinkers that Trump is becoming even more insane.

I don't know how to work in the not-Trumpsters crowd, but according to this survey:

Level of trust in The New York Times in the United States as of April 2018

only 39% of respondents find the New York Times to be either "Trustworthy" or "Very Trustworthy." I wouldn't call that the vast majority of well, anybody. And according to this Gallup poll , trust in the media barely half what it was in the early 70s.

These days, it seems like the NY Times is a source of confirmation bias as much as anything else. I suspect that is particularly true in the op-ed section.

For Trump to get so much flak, he must be right on target

Dirty old Joe is a corrupt placeholder for Harris. Neither of them is fit to be president
