130 Year Old Rifle Found in National Park

Most interesting. It makes you wonder how it got there and exactly when it was left.

NOTE: This story is historical in nature and is not about any modern political issue.

Just as a guess (no way to prove it without a more detailed search of the area) there may be the bones of a horse or donkey nearby and the bones of a man within a day's walk (4-5 miles in that terrain). Looks like someone lost his horse, left the rifle as useless weight, then didn't make it out and come back later for the gun.

Nice post.

There must be a record of the sale of this rifle and the background check associated with it. /s

Found in the ''Great Basin National Park'' in Nevada. Rough hostile country. The story behind it could be most interesting.

Definitely Kavika. In the Author's Notes of his book The Empty Land , the late Western author Louis Lamour had this to say about the area.

This description is what made me think that there was likely a lost horse involved with leaving the rifle. A man on foot in this area would be hard put to carry enough water to make it to the next water source. The only way he could do so would be to abandon all excess weight. A Model 73 Winchester weighs about 7 pounds. That's the same weight as a gallon of water. If I were in that situation and had a choice of which to carry, I'd leave the rifle behind and carry more water.

I driven that road Rock. It's called ''the lonest road in the world''...

You do not want to break down there.
