'It's Not a Border Crisis,' Says Ocasio-Cortez. 'It's an Imperialism Crisis... a Climate Crisis... a Trade Crisis.' | Common Dreams News
The New York Democrat also explained how the U.S. carceral system and foreign policy relate to the nation's immigration system.

On Instagram Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez similarly said that "number one, our solutions need to be rooted in foreign policy, because our interventionist history in foreign policy and history over decades of destabilizing regions drive people to migrate—but people don't wanna have that conversation."

"Secondly, let's talk about the climate crisis, because the U.S. has disproportionately contributed to the total amount of emissions that is causing a planetary climate crisis right now," she said, while emphasizing that the Global South is disproportionately bearing the brunt of the consequences, including droughts, floods, and wildfires.

"Then we have the issues of trade, which economically contribute to... some of these conditions that add fuel to the fire," Ocasio-Cortez explained, before challenging the way that some political figures, reporters, and others are discussing the rising number of people—including children—seeking to enter the country.

She asserted that "anyone who's using the term 'surge' around you, consciously, is trying to invoke a militaristic frame and that's a problem, because... this is not a surge. These are children, and they are not insurgents, and we are not being invaded—which, by the way, is a white supremacist idea."

It's only 2 mos into this admin & our fraught, unjust immigration system will not transform in that time.

That's why bold reimagination is so impt.

DHS shouldn't exist, agencies should be reorganized, ICE gotta go, ban for-profit detention, create climate refugee status & more.

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 23, 2021

Ocasio-Cortez was among those who responded with alarm last month when the Biden administration announced it was reopening a controversial detention center for unaccompanied children. She tweeted that "this is not okay, never has been okay, never will be okay—no matter the administration or party."

"Our immigration system is built on a carceral framework," she said, calling for boldly "reimagining our relationship to each other and challenging common assumptions we take for granted."

The Department of Homeland Security "shouldn't exist" and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has "gotta go," Ocasio-Cortez said, pushing for a ban on for-profit detention and creating a special status for climate refugees—which experts warn will become increasingly necessary as humanity activity continues to heat the planet.

AOC understands the complicated reasons for the many refugees and immigrants coming to America.

What are some of those "complicated reasons"?

In Vietnam among 'we Air Cavalry' there was a saying---"You can't ask if you don't know."

So trafficking women and minors is OK with you

Not to mention the criminals, drugs, and Covid that comes across with them

AOC is really a special kind of stupid.

IT was bad enough during the last border crises that her contribution consisted on putting on a piece of performance art, screaming and crying for the "kids" behind the fences, not realizing that the camera angle actually revealed she was crying about an empty road. So she follows that up by making an ass of her herself.

So we are facing a surge of unaccompanied minors, invited by the President worked to elect, that has caused a humanitarian crises.

Is she mad about the overcrowding and the conditions at the border? Nope.

Is she mad Joe Biden tried to cover up the situation by channeling the USSR and censoring news coverage? Nope.

Is she mad Biden lied to the country about what's happening ? Nope

She's mad at the use of the perfectly appropriate word "surge."  You can only laugh at her and her word salad of buzz words kids throw out in dorm rooms when they are 18.  Sadly, she never progressed past that stage. She can't make a coherent argument, doesn't offers any   solutions and has to assault the English language to distract from her own incompetence and hypocrisy.

It's bad enough someone this shallow can be elected to Congress, the really sad part is some people take her ignorant play acting  seriously.

I am sure there is a bar somewhere willing to hire AOC as a bartender. That is all she is qualified to do.

Of course the NY Congress woman is correct-------Imperialism has created hardship for many people these past few hundred years.

As far as the detention center, we either care for them the best we can under the circumstance or do the opposite like the previous administration.

Yes it is a tough situation and the root of it is the lazy concentrated wealth that flourishes under the watchful control of those receiving that wealth.

You mean force them to go through through the courts like they are supposed to? Realizing that 70% will have their applications rejected. No letting them enter the US, disappear, and never show up for their court dates. They were being care for in Mexico until Biden opened the flood gates. Mexico's leader isn't too happy with Biden.

Also, there is a pandemic currently- in case the left hadn't heard, or have forgotten about it now that Biden has assumed the White House. FEMA head claimed the infection rate was 6%; but the numbers don't even come close to being that low even among the ones that are caught and detained. Average detention time is 3 days- it can be up to 2 weeks for incubation to be complete. That of course doesn't take into account those that make it into the country w/o being caught. Guess illegals are just deemed healthier than US citizens. Of course the current surge in Covid 19 cases points to something far different.

Yes it is a tough situation and the root of it is the lazy concentrated wealth that flourishes under the watchful control of those receiving that wealth.

No, the root cause is people that are unwilling to work for change in the countries they are from. The Democrats have been ringing the dinner bell since their primaries; and Biden hasn't stopped with his EO' and rhetoric. Throwing US tax payer money at the problem isn't going to fix the problems in their countries; or sending the US military in won't do a damn thing except create another quagmire from which we will never leave. We suck at nation building. Look no further than Palestine, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, or the Ukraine if you need proof.

If the left feel so strongly about correcting the situation in Central and South America- grab a gun (from what I have heard they are easy to procure in the US) get together as many of your leftist friends as you can; and head on down. I am sure all the people in those countries need is proper leadership, and someone to show them how it is done. Two things before you go. First renounce your US citizenship. Second don't return. They are going to need strong leadership to stay on the straight an narrow. Of course that might turn you into the very thing that you are going there to fight against.

Maybe you can even get AOC to lead you. She is supposedly great at raising money; which you are definitely going to need.

IMO AOC is proof positive of the old adage that it is better to keep ones mouth closed and let the world think you a fool, than to open one's mouth and prove it. To me she seems to me to keep opening her mouth on a regular basis!

"Our immigration system is built on a carceral framework,"

Yeah, well when you put yourself in a place where it is illegal for you to be, you tend to get locked up. The US is certainly not unique in that regard.

It's An Imperialism Crisis

What Imperialism? Not from the United States. And where is this imperialism? In Mexico? Central America? South America? The countries of the Americas have had pretty much set borders for a long time and the various countries tend to respect them (except for the migrant issue). No one is trying to conquer anyone else. WTF is she talking about?

Remember back in the day when communists would randomly accuse the US of Imperialism for no reason (and with no sense of the irony they should have employed)? This sounds a lot like that.

I think he means Corporate imperialism; which he simplified to imperialism of the rich.

He is still trying to blame the US for Central and South American countries for things done decades ago. Of course most of those countries tried Socialism; and failed miserably; which is the reason they are in the situation they are now.

I am surprise he hasn't thrown the word comrade out yet.
