John McAfee, the antivirus software pioneer who founded cybersecurity company McAfee, was found dead Wednesday in a jail cell in Spain, according to a statement from his attorney.

A Spanish court earlier in the day ordered for the extradition of Mr. McAfee in connection with a federal criminal proceeding in Tennessee. Mr. McAfee had been detained in the country since October in connection with criminal charges filed in Tennessee by the Justice Department's tax division.

The Manhattan U.S. attorney's office also sought the extradition of Mr. McAfee for a separate criminal case.

"John was and will always be remembered as a fighter," said Nishay K. Sanan, an attorney for Mr. McAfee. "He tried to love this country but the U.S. government made his existence impossible."

Mr. Sanan said the court ruling Wednesday was going to be appealed in the next few days and that the New York extradition was still pending in a lower court in Spain.

Mr. McAfee founded the security company that still bears his name in 1987, but he sold his stake in the business in the 1990s and had not been involved in the company's operations for decades.

The story seems to imply that he did himself in because he was going to be extradited back to the US. .

I dont know a lot about the guy, other than that he was a very controversial figure who tried to run for president on the Libertarian ticket a couple times.

I actually met the man once back in the early 2000's when seemingly out of the blue he showed up in Portal, Arizona about 50 miles away from where I live. The guy built a mansion with a private runway and a cafe called the Skydancer. Had a good friend and coworker who lived in Portal and was a musician. he was invited to perform for McAfee and circle of syncophants he surrounded himself with. He invited me to come with him and help set up. After shaking hands with him, I literally wanted to wipe my hands on the side of my pants. Those were just the vibes he put out. He performed twice and said he refused to have anything more to do with the man after that saying McAfee was one of the creepiest guys he ever met! A couple of years later McAfee just up and closed up his mansion and left for Belize. He left a note with the local store in Portal, a very tiny community, that anyone who wanted could show at the mansion with a pickup or trailer and help themselves to anything there, which included all the furniture, fixtures, and many expensive works of art. McAfee never returned to Portal I believe his mansion still remains on the market. Small world.

Some of my computers from the past had his anti-virus software. Have to say it worked well.

I am currently using McAfee in spite of my extreme dislike of Peter Theil.

Have you ever tried to cancel McAfee?

When I worked as a computer Tech one of my jobs was making sure the computers were secure. When the President of the company decided to go with a new program I had the job of getting rid of the McAfee and installing the new program. I could not believe how controlling the program was and how hard it was to uninstall. The first few computers raked me over the coals until I got the hang of it and from there on it was not so frustrating and time consuming. But, it was still very hard to uninstall.

I had once thought of putting McAfee on my own computer, but, decided to go with a different program. I was really glad I had not installed the McAfee after the nightmare of uninstalling it from all those work computers. (Ugh!)

They just kept billing me no matter how many times I cancelled their services. I ended up by canceling the credit card to get it all to end...

I have tried to uninstall McAfee and it is darned near impossible. I would up having to take my computer to the repair shop and they had to wipe my entire drive. My repair guy told me he hates McAfee because the system was deliberately designed to put out tendrils throughout Windows in order to make you contact McAfee for help which they would then charge you for. I never used McAfee again after that.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, text TALK to 741741, or visit     for more information.

John McAfee, the antivirus-pioneer-turned-cryptocurrency-enthusiast, alleged murderer, and alleged tax evader, was found dead in a prison cell in Spain, according to   multiple   reports   by Spanish media.

On Wednesday, a Spanish court   ruled   that McAfee was to be extradited to the United States, where he faced charges for   tax fraud . News reports say he was found dead and the authorities suspect he died by suicide.

The Mossos d'Esquadra, the local police in the Spanish region of Catalonia, where McAfee was held, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The US Department of Justice also did not respond.

McAfee, 75, made a fortune in the late 1980s and early 1990s after he founded McAfee Associates, one of the first companies to make a computer antivirus. His involvement in the cybersecurity world practically stopped in 1994, when he resigned from the company. Since then, his life has been mired in one controversy after another. McAfee dipped his toes in several ventures, such as yoga, herbal antibiotics, and more recently cryptocurrency.

In 2012, when he was living in Belize, McAfee was accused of murder after one of his neighbors who was found dead.   A 2016 documentary   by director Nanette Burstein laid out the case against McAfee, who was able to escape from Belize and avoid any repercussions.

More recently, McAfee became a minor celebrity in the world of cryptocurrency for pumping and dumping different digital coins, activities which earned him and his team   an indictment for fraud this year by a Manhattan federal court

In one of his last tweets, McAfee complained about life in prison.

"There is much sorrow in prison, disguised as hostility.  The sorrow is plainly visible even in the most angry faces," he   wrote . "I'm old and content with food and a bed but for the young prison is a horror - a reflection of the minds of those who conceived them."
