The Justice Department says the Treasury Department must provide the House Ways and Means Committee former President Donald Trump's tax returns, apparently ending a long legal showdown over the records.

During the Trump administration, then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he wouldn't turn over the tax returns because he concluded they were being sought by Democrats who control the House of Representatives for partisan reasons.

The committee sued for the records under a federal law that says the Internal Revenue Service "shall furnish" the returns of any taxpayer to a handful of top lawmakers. The committee said it needed Trump's taxes for an investigation into whether he complied with tax law.

In a memo dated Friday, Justice's Office of Legal Counsel said the committee chairman "has invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President's tax information" and that under federal law, "Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee."

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. already has obtained copies of Trump's personal and business tax records as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Trump tried to prevent his accountants from handing over the documents, taking the issue to the Supreme Court. The justices rejected Trump's argument that he had broad immunity as president.

"The committee said it needed Trump's taxes for an investigation into whether he complied with tax law."

Why? WTF is the IRS for? What do they hope to find that the IRS hasn't.................well we all know what they "HOPE" to find.

FFS leave this alone

In 2016 Trump said that if his tax returns were released he would lose the election.

Since he is threatening to run again the people should see his tax returns to find out what scared him so much.

Again I ask, what the hell has the IRS been doing? Are they simply incompetent in their investigative capacity? Why do these pompous assed Congress-people think they are so much better at figuring out taxes and tax laws?

I can't find where he said that anywhere. And it is probably due to the fact that he had only paid like $750 for a couple years. Who knows.

There are more pressing concerns right now than Trump's tax returns. Such as, are people paying more now for diapers under the Biden administration than they were under the previous one?

That's all well and fine but what does the Justice Dept plan to do with them?

Use them for partisan political purposes.

Provide them to the House Ways and Means Committee so that they can practice their Exercise in Futility grandstanding.

Ok there's that, but can they use them to prosecute him for something?

I really don't know. I think it's more of a wreck his credibility campaign trying desperately to keep him from running it 2024 or before. I mean NY is trying also based on taxes and business practices so who knows.

I think it's more than that. If Trump decides to not run, then this sham will try and smear the person he endorses to be President, in this case, probably DeSantis.

You can tell how much the media is already out to get him based on the number of negative stories written.

Compare that to negative stories about Cuomo, who actually is responsible for thousands of deaths and is accused multiple times of sexual harassment/assault. The number against Cuomo in comparison is minuscule.

I'm surprised that we haven't seen all sorts of info leaked out from Manhattan. Maybe now that Congress will have them that activity will speed up. After all, it's easier to deny you leaked info if multiple people have the same info, harder to hide if  your office is the only office that has the info.

The way leftists go, if there is something on Trump, you can damn be sure that it would get leaked out almost immediately. Because the DA has been quiet leads me to believe there is nothing to see, and they don't want to get their leftist base in a tizzy and go out and destroy more property.

But we shall see.
