U.S. COVID-19 daily case tally back at February levels and Florida has highest hospitalizations yet with patients getting younger
The U.S. had a one-day tally of more than 100,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, the highest single-day figure since February

The U.S. had a one-day tally of more than 100,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest single-day figure since February, in the latest sign that the pandemic is far from over.

The vast majority of new cases are in people who are not vaccinated, prompting public health experts to again push for more of that group to get their shots.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, said Sunday that more “pain and suffering” is ahead as long as cases keep climbing.

States with high levels of transmission include Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida. Things are so bad in the Sunshine State that it now has the highest level of hospitalized patients since the start of the pandemic, with 10,207 people in hospitals with confirmed COVID cases on Friday.

Florida is now leading the nation in per capita hospitalizations for COVID-19, as hospitals around the state report having to put emergency-room patients in beds in hallways and others document a noticeable drop in the age of patients. Florida has averaged 1,525 adult hospitalizations a day, and 35 daily pediatric hospitalizations in the last week.

It's a virus.

Like the Flu.

All the talk about the Corona Virus being so much more deadly doesn't reflect reality.

There are several new aspects to this new variant-- but one that is an extremely significant is this fact... jrSmiley_5_smiley_image.png

Well, mostly true. But politics does make a  huge difference . . .  in another way.

And that is that some states have much, much, higher infection rates of new cases than other states.

And it would appear that that is due to a large extent what their politicians are telling their people..

(Particularly their governors...)

Here's an interesting statistic: Of the 50 states, 1/3rd of all new infections were in just 2 states!!! jrSmiley_30_smiley_image.gif

Anyone care to guess what those 2 states are?

In the past week we have been adding 1,000 plus people a day for hospitalization and according to some reports on average of 35 children per day are being hospitalized. The positivity rate in some counties is as high as 25%.

Some hospitals are limiting or canceling elective surgery and some are restricting visitors.

Some of the biggest companies in Florida are again requiring their employees to be masked, Walmart, Publix and Disney World. Disney also requires that customers are masked at any Disney transportation and inside venues and they have given all employees 60 days to be fully vaccinated as a term of employment.

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. —

Carnival Cruise line will require passengers who are not vaccinated and sailing from Florida to get travel insurance.

Carnival Cruise says they have been sailing with 95% of guests and crew vaccinated since the Fourth of July Weekend.

The cruise line says unvaccinated guests will need to have travel insurance for sailings departing on July 31. This will not currently be required for children under the age of 12, as they are ineligible for vaccines.

Guests who are unvaccinated must provide proof of a valid travel insurance policy when they check in that has a minimum of $10,000 per person in medical coverage and $30,000 for emergency medical evacuation and without COVID-19 exclusions.

Carnival will require the policy to name the unvaccinated guest as policy holder or beneficiary.

Unvaccinated passengers who don't have travel insurance will not be let on the ship and will not get a refund.

Royal Caribbean previously announced a similar requirement.

You notice that it is republicans, that always decry big government and big brother, are the ones making laws on how private businesses on private property can conduct their business?

They feel private companies should be allowed to discriminate based on religion, but not based on medical facts to keep their employees and customers healthy and alive.

I was going into a CVS here in Chicago this morning and realized I had forgot to bring a mask. I went in and asked them if I needed a mask and the clerk said yes.  I said I have a vaccination card I can show you and she said it doesnt matter , everyone , even the vaccinated, have to wear a mask in the store since yesterday.  The mask requirement in almost all stores was relaxed a couple months ago in Chicago and now it is back, at least in CVS. Not sure about the other chain stores around here yet.

BTW,  the positivity rate in Chicago was 4.75 yesterday.

There are approximately 100 million not fully vaccinated adults in the US.  Will incomplete herd immunity save them? Will the 2024 Olympics be postponed because covid has not gone away yet ?

One thing being overlooked, imo, is the age groups for vaccinations, compared to death rates at their peak. Predominantly 85%~90% of deaths were in the 60+ age range. Nationally, 80% of this age group is fully vaccinated. In theory, this should keep the peak deaths of this surge well below January or more in the May range.

Still there is more to understand about the efficicacy of the vaccines against the delta variant AND longevity of immunity. That's just for the current known variants. The delta variant theoretically originated in India, so global vaccination rates are every bit as important as national rates. We are up to the Lambda variants an might need to come up with a new labeling system, when all is said and done. Some might be significantly worse than Delta. Time for me to shut up.

I have heard heart trouble, lung trouble even erectile dysfunction.

Yes, that's correct.
But the key word there is were.
But with the new variants that is starting to change.
Of course a change in the infection rate proceeds the change in deaths.
And one of the things I've noticed about the infection rate with the new variants is that proportionately, many more children are getting infection. (Would would tend to ultimately result in an increasing death rate amongst children)

till there is more to understand about the efficacy of the vaccines against the delta variant AND longevity of immunity.

And remember...there's a difference between just getting the Virus...and being having a severe case and/or being hospitalized and dying.

Generally the term "getting the Virus means its in your body. (Then you're infected). But "getting the Virus doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a sever infection.

From the data we've seen so far, the two RNA vaccines are less effective of preventing people from getting infected.

However, the good news is: those vaccines so far appear to be extremely effective against coming down with a severe case--  extremely effective against getting hospitalized and/or dying.
