Former first lady Melania Trump fired back at a historian who criticized the renovations she made to the White House Rose Garden last year, calling his remarks "misleading" and "dishonorable" before questioning his credibility.

".@BeschlossDC has proven his ignorance by showing a picture of the Rose Garden in its infancy. The Rose Garden is graced with a healthy & colorful blossoming of roses. His misleading information is dishonorable & he should never be trusted as a professional historian," the former first lady's office tweeted on Sunday.

The message was in response to a tweet from Michael Beschloss, presidential historian for NBC News and a frequent critic of former President Trump, who said that the "evisceration" of the White House Rose Garden was finished a year ago this month.

"And here was the grim result - decades of American history made to disappear," Beschloss wrote.

The Trump White House revealed the newly renovated Rose Garden, which was spearheaded by the then-first lady, last August. Her office said she wanted to make the area more closely resemble the original 1962 design by Rachel Lambert Mellon during the Kennedy administration.

The changes sparked criticism among many who attacked the historic garden's new look.

A petition surfaced in April, which has received more than 80,000 signatures, calling for first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff to reverse the changes to the Rose Garden.

"We want Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff to take this on and restore the Rose Garden to [former first lady Jackie Kennedy's] original design," the Change.org petition said.

The petition argued that the renovations made by the Trump administration "ripped away" Kennedy's legacy. Biden and Emhoff have not responded to the petition.

I'll listen to Melania Trump about something when she apologizes to the nation for supporting the biggest liar in American political history.

What a stupid thing to get all partisan about. The garden has existed for 120 years  (so there’s really nothing “original” about the 1962 design) and it has been redesigned multiple times in that period. There is a long tradition of presidents and their spouses making changes to the property. Having petitions to undo that work is just childish.

I doubt if Michael Beschloss criticized her out of partisanship, although it is possible that as a presidential historian he may be criticizing her because she's married to the worst president in US history.

You doubt it? Based on what?

although it is possible that as a presidential historian he may be criticizing her because she's married to the worst president in US history.

Ya think? Of course it’s possible. I’d say it’s likely. We’re talking about a garden. There’s a petition . . . about a garden. He went to the trouble to make an angry tweet about it. It was simply redesigned and he said it had been “eviscerated.” Eviscerated?? It’s a garden.

It was a garden before, and it remains a garden today. Gardens get manipulated and redesigned every day all over the world. From little boxes in apartment windows, to backyard gardens, to iconic arboretums and botanical gardens where fees are actually charged for admission.

Unless she had it bulldozed or burned and then left it in that state, describing it as “eviscerated” is wildly over the top. This is just as stupid as attacking her for the Christmas decorations. You don’t have to prefer what she did to what was there, but acting like she did something shameful or inappropriate is just irrational.

I’d say so. It looks like his “before” photo is taken at ground level at a time when the roses where fully grown up.

original

The “after” picture is taken from much higher (making the roses look smaller) plus they have probably been pruned. Roses should be pruned annually, usually pretty close to the ground.

original

Here’s a closer, ground level look at the garden after the changes. There are still plenty of roses. They might be lower to the ground, but they will grow.

Unbelievable.  This is the first time I've heard anything from the former 2nd Lady, Melania Trump.   And this is just more proof that SWW was correct about 'the woman'.

If there was nothing there prior I would say "Nice job Mrs Trump." because it is decent landscaping.  But considering what she took an ax to, decimating the beauty of the roses, I would tell her "Nice job Lizzie Borden".  I am surprised that Trump didn't turn it into a putting green.
