BOSTON (CBS) – The statewide mask requirement for K-12 schools in Massachusetts will be lifted on February 28, Governor Charlie Baker and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) announced Wednesday.
“The reason we are taking the mask mandate off is we do believe between our testing infrastructure, our vaccination programs, our data and the guidance we’ve gotten from a lot of people we’ve talked to in the public health community is there is a consequence at this point for keeping kids in masks, and we think we should move beyond that,” Baker said during the announcement at the State House.
DESE said in a statement the decision was made “in consultation with infectious disease physicians, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other medical experts.”
“We are relieved to now be in a place where we can provide young people additional relief from COVID-19 restrictions so they can continue to move towards normalcy in the classroom,” said Education Commissioner Jeff Riley.
The mask mandate for all licensed child care providers will also end on February 28. The Department of Early Education and Care will have more information for those programs next week.
The Archdiocese of Boston later announced Wednesday afternoon it is also eliminating all mask mandates for Catholic schools as of February 28.

Wow-- are the MAGA-cultists ever going to be pissed about this!!!
"Wow-- are the MAGA-cultists ever going to be pissed about this!!!"
Not likely. They're against mandates.
Never mis-under-estimate the sheer nuttiness of some of these MAGA-cultists!
Why?
One less reason to play The Victim Card, that's why!
(But you probably already knew that...???)

It is all leading up to the state of the union where Joe will announce he single handedly defeated Covid in spite of the evil Republicans and people can go back to living there lives. All hail Joe!
Good news.
It seems like every time it seems like Covid is on the wane...a new variant comes along and things start looking worse.
Of course its impossible to know how this will all play out, but I think there's a chance that while some form of Covid may be around forever (like the Common Flu)...the mutations that are milder will pre-dominate.
Not killing people is a much better strategy for a Virus than killing a lot of people-- because it allows for greater spread and therefore the survival of the Virus).
People it kills-- especially if it does that relatively quickly-- means less people around to spread it.
If infections soar, I wonder if they will go back to the mandates.
I would imagine so. In California, all the restrictions disappeared in June of last year. They started to creep back when Delta appeared, and came back in force with Omicron. The rules should be a response to what is happening.
Maybe if serious infections soar.
But what if they soar-- but its a form that's not particularly deadly (being more like the Common Flu? We don't have mask mandates, massive shut-downs, etc for that)
Those tyrants in the Democratic Party will never roll back their fascist mandates!
Oh wait . . . Shut up! mumbleblahblah I hate Fauci!
Actually they will change them when it looks like it will cost them elections. They are tanking so bad they have to do this in order to try and take credit for it to fool the people into thinking they really care. Such a magnanimous group.
Buh bye.
