25 Days of Crhistmas, Dec. 5-- Doris Day and Bing Crosby, by Marsha Meyer
Written by Frank Loesser in 1944, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" was debuted in 1944 by Loesser and his wife, Lynn Garland, at their hotel in Nevada. Loesser later sold the song to MGM, infuriating his wife, who had always felt it was "their song".
Although popular during the holiday season, the song was meant to be sung as a romantic ballad during the winter. While the song was intended to show a flirtatious play on words between the "mouse" part and the "wolf" part, criticism has developed over the years that draws the wolf as a sexual predator and the mouse as being stalked.
All I can say is: Never in a million years would I have dreamed up that. To me, we should take these songs as merely flirtatious and stop being so overly dramatic.
Just about anybody who is Somebody in the music world has recorded this song, at one time or another... Funny, though, this version is NOT listed on the songography of either Doris Day, Bing Crosby, or on the song's information! While many somewhat "odd" couples sang and recorded this duet, from Mae West and Rock Hudson, to Al Hirt and Ann Margaret, perhaps the most unusual twist of the song was when it was held up as an example of all that is wrong with America, by Sayyid Qutb, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Without further ado, please allow me to present for your enjoyment: Baby, It's Cold Outside!
Hope everyone has a great day today!
Please have fun and be nice to everyone! Thank you!
I've always loved this song, and can't imagine why this recording isn't included in the couples who have sung the duet! Nor can I imagine people thinking it is a stalker/victim situation, OR that it is an example of decadent America... I sometimes think that people just have dirty minds and read into things what they want to see.
Hope you enjoy this! I'm having a wonderful time!
We still have Christmas Albums (vinyl) and there are a couple by Doris and Bing in the box
Thanks for sharing
I still have my vinyl, too, and all my old wax 78s. Wouldn't trade them for anything!
Did you know that Bing Crosby fell in love with Grace Kelly when they made the movie, The Country Girl? He was going to leave his sick, breast-cancer ridden wife for her, but she decided to make him go away. I always liked Grace Kelly, but something about Bing made me uncomfortable. I always thought he could be mean... And he was.
Doris was one of my favorites and still is. Wish I could tell her so! She was the mother of Terry Melcher, from a brief, abusive, first marriage. I might be able to find her book and figure out when they sang this, but, then again, probably not.
Thanks so much for coming by! These are just for fun and relaxation-- nothing much. A bit of fluff to brighten the season...
Great old time ''Christmas Music''...
AAhh...Bing and Doris..what a team. This is a :lift me up" song. (to my anyway)
Thanks, dear Kavika-- that's exactly what I want to hear! Fun, great, "old time" music.
Makes me smile!
It is a fun song, dear Nona! Fun and cute!
I'm so glad that these are bringing good memories for you! They do me, too!
I loved that song! Dear Doris said that when she sang it, she had goosebumps, knowing it was going to be a big hit!
Here she is at 90 years old! I'm just grateful that we still have her around!
Or rap. Popular music lost me when rap started...
This is (a little bit) before my time... but not before my folk's time! So this and others like it were playing all the time when I was a kid -- at home, in the stores, ...
I had never heard anything more than flirting... and I can sing along without a hitch. In fact, I kinda included it among the Christmascarols, probably because of the time of year when it was all around.
Wow ... Doris Day . Did you know she played a starring role in a Hitchcock film with the dangerous title : "The Man Who Knew Too Much" ?
Great song!! How cold one not like it?
Do you recognize her co-star ... the guy skulking around in the back of the room with the disarming smile ?
Jimmy Stewart???
Bingo !!!
Dowser ,
That was a terrific duet . There aren't many done in that "counterpoint style" . The only other one I can think of is :
