In its war against Hamas, Israel faces a tragic choice between two different routes to disaster

A nd on the eighth day, the   war began anew . After a week of joy and relief for those Israeli families reunited with loved ones held hostage by Hamas, and of respite from Israeli bombardment for the people of Gaza, seven days of rolling ceasefires came to an end this morning. No more hugs, no more quiet. Instead, the war between Israel and Hamas is back on, presenting once more what moral philosophers refer to as a “ tragic choice ” – a dilemma where there are no good options, only two different routes to disaster. In fighting Hamas, Israel faces just such a predicament – and yet there are too many, among both those who defend Israel and those who denounce it, who refuse to see that.

This view can bridle at any attempt at restraint. It resents US secretary of state Antony Blinken for insisting on Thursday that, before Israel takes the war to southern Gaza, it must have a “ clear plan in place   that puts a premium on protecting civilians”. It argues that responsibility for a death toll estimated to be   in excess of 15,000   – in less than two months – rests squarely with a Hamas enemy that deliberately embeds itself in population centres, including in schools and hospitals.

Israel is doing its best to avoid civilian casualties, Hamas is doing its best to see that as many of them are killed as is possible. Israel will keep going until the terrorist threat is neutralized. That might take a while, as a war cannot be successfully planned...too many variables.  They really have no other option if they are to survive as a people and a democratic nation.

Hamas is trying to go gain the worldwide sympathy vote, but they have played the oppressed victim card too often and it is becoming less and less effective as long as they persist in holding hostages.

Worldwide support and demonstrations for Hamas (which I can't understand) tell a different story, Greg.

as long as they persist in holding hostages.

Problem is many of those on the left look at the hostages as collateral damage and deserve what the got/will get.

Do you have names of those on the left? Could it be Netanyahu, Gantz, el al.

I don't have names of anonymous leftists from colleges and blue cities like Oakland that look at Israel as the aggressor of Oct 7. Tens of thousands of them are difficult to identify.

I thought according to to those on NT conversatives and the media it's the leftists that are calling for a cease fire which is saving hostages not pointing them out as collateral damage.

The call for a cease fire is nothing more than a ruse to allow Hamas to rearm and reorganize so they can conduct another Oct 7.

Nothing more

Why were they calling for a cease fire DURING A CEASE FIRE for a week.

If you Hamas supporters truly believed what you believe, why are you not asking yourselves these questions.

I saw photos and statements and interviews with Médecins Sans Frontières I also saw photos of Hamas decapitating people. Too bad you didn't see that it would certainly have improved your knowledge of the carnage.

If you Hamas supporters truly believed what you believe, why are you not asking yourselves these questions.

So now I'm a Hamas supporter, what proof do you have of that lie? It's sad when you have to make radical statements about someone you know nothing about, but it seems that all the right has.

If you Hamas supporters ...

Who on this site is a Hamas supporter?   I know of none.   So WTF are you talking about?

Why would you expect your questions to be answered when you are implying those who would answer would be Hamas supporters?

Letting it fester another hundred years is not an answer. Hammering out a just and lasting peace will not be easy. Butz what are the alternatives?

Who is going to do that, Hamas, the PA with Israel?

That isn't for me to decide. I imagine it would take teams to negotiate a peace accord. Maybe an Arab leader, like Anwar Sadat, will come forward to represent the Palestinians. Peace is possible and in everyone's best interests, except the terrorist's...

It means that whatever choice Israel makes, continue the war or a truce neither is a good choice.

It can't be easy (by any definition of the word) for Israel to sat in the middle of a community of Islamic states-no matter how nice they 'become' to Israel.

Hasn't Israel been forced to make these choices before?  In the past Israel has tried diplomacy, tried compromise, tried stepping back.  What has worked in the past?  Simply repeating what has failed before doesn't seem to be a viable path forward.

This time Israel has chosen to pursue a very aggressive, hard line approach to a continuing security threat that past attempts failed to diminish.  Israel's current approach has shown that the rest of the world has ignored the festering problem of Gaza.  The Oct. 7th Hamas attack on Israel highlights the failings of the rest of the world to address the situation.  The Middle East has mouthed a lot of sentimental crap but has done absolutely nothing to alleviate the problem.

The world has thrown the problem of Gaza onto Israel's shoulders.  Now the world wants to dictate how Israel addresses that problem.  The whole situation would be improved by the world getting its hands dirty for a change instead of just sweeping the problem under Israel's carpet,

Israel has done all of those things.

But yet here we are again despite Israel's best efforts to live in peace.

Maybe instead of griping about Israel, those folks should look at the terrorists to do something different besides killing every Jew they can.

of course, that seems impossible for some of the more liberal folks in this country--as clearly seen on these pages.

2 million people in Gaza have been holding the world hostage.  You know, Gaza is about the size of Kyiv.
