BRUSSELS, Dec 14 (Reuters) - European Union leaders granted Ukraine a major political win on Thursday by agreeing to start membership negotiations at a time when its counter-offensive against Russia's invasion has failed to make major gains and U.S. military aid has become more uncertain.
EU diplomats and officials said the unexpected green light for talks took place as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban - who had for weeks said he would block such a deal - agreed to leave the room, knowing the other leaders would go ahead and vote.
Orban confirmed that he had abstained from the vote at the EU summit on what he called a "bad decision". It was unclear at this stage what exactly he could be getting in return.
Such an unusual way to approve a decision - especially such a major one - is unheard of in Brussels, even for a place where diplomats have long been very creative about how to strike deals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed the decision.
"This is a victory for Ukraine. A victory for all of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires, and strengthens," he said.
"I congratulate every Ukrainian on this day... History is made by those who don't get tired of fighting for freedom."

And here come the nattering nabobs of nato negativity…
The entire outlook changes dramatically and toward past due resolution with Ukraine’s past due and warranted membership.

Good, let the EU finance that war.
About time ……
They have been.
So has the US in case you didn’t notice
I've noticed and on top of that I've noticed that somewhere around 90% of that US funding stays in the US to pay american arms manufacturers and their workers. Around 1 million US workers depend on the arms trade.

Perhaps a more palatable and acceptable form of SNAP?
In the last few days, Denmark has passed a bill for another 1.1 billion USD in aid to Ukraine and Finland is doubling its capacity for making howitzer munitions to help Ukraine.

It's great news that the EU is in membership talks for Ukraine.
Some people also seem to forget that the EU funds expenses for 6 million Ukrainian refugees.
Agreed.
Lol ….. sounds like a lot of other countries are missing the boat then ….
This is good
It's great to see the Europeans stepping to do their fair share in defeating Putin and provide for the common defense.
Norway just committed to another $1.7 billion for Ukraine this is after $7 billion already in the pipeline for Ukraine.
