The House Judiciary Committee advanced a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress over the Justice Department's failure to produce the subpoenaed audio recording of President Biden's interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur.

The House Judiciary Committee considered a resolution to hold the attorney general in contempt during a mark-up session Thursday. The vote advances the measure for a full floor vote.

The move comes after the White House asserted executive privilege over the audio and video recordings related to Hur's interviews with the president as part of his classified records investigation.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that "the attorney general made it clear that law enforcement files like these need to be protected."

"And so the president made his determination at the request of the attorney general," she said. "So just want to make that second point that I made really clear."

Hur, who released his report to the public in February after months of investigation, did not recommend criminal charges against Biden for mishandling and retaining classified documents, and he stated that he would not bring charges against Biden even if he were not in the Oval Office.

Those records included classified documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan and other countries, among other records related to national security and foreign policy, which Hur said implicated "sensitive intelligence sources and methods."

Hur, in his report, described Biden as a "sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory" — a description that has raised significant concerns for Biden's 2024 re-election campaign.

Republicans again wasting taxpayers time and money with this exercise in futility.

Well now Biden has issued an executive privilege  to stop the release so I hardly see where this can hold water.

It's almost as if they are incapable of learning from their mistakes, they held Holder in contempt for running guns to Mexico to arm the Cartels, what they forgot is Holder has to prosecute the contempt charge, just like i see zero chance in Garland prosecuting himself.

Is it a legitimate use of executive privilege? That's the issue.

"republicans will use it against me" therefore I can't share it sort of confirms how politicized the DOJ is.

SCOTUS didn't think so for Nixon. But this late in the legislative year with Democrats in charge of the Senate and Democrats in charge of the administrative branch, I really think it's just too little too late for any of this. IMO Republicans in the House would be much better served if they passed some bills to actually help the American people.

But this late in the legislative year with Democrats in charge of the Senate and Democrats in charge of the administrative branch,

yeah, the entire point is to keep the video out of the public’s hands until the election. It’s a frivolous claim (the transcripts are public, so there no secret information to preserve).

it’s just politics, from the same DOJ who claims it’s legal pursuit of trump isn’t.

Republicans in the House would be much better served if they passed some bills to actually help the American people.

you laid out why that’s impossible above. Schumer already announced he won’t let the senate even vote on any bill Biden won’t sign.  Oversight is all the republicans can do.

Yeah, party over public service. It's been that way for way too long now. Remember Pelosi coming out after a meeting in the WH with Trump where she stated the Democrats would not pass any bill that would give Trump a victory? IIRC, that was when Trump was trying to push for an infrastructure bill.

They have a tendency to do that.

Jordan defied a House subpoena from the hand picked Pelosi TDS driven Jan 6th committee that had no Republican representation. Despite Democrat protests both Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger were kicked out of the Republican party.

.

Faux committee, for a faux investigation, that violated all House norms and rules.

Yeah, but they should do all they can to make Biden and DOJ look duplicitous and corrupt.

In the meantime, Joe's presidential privilege ploy is not going over very well, even with his MSM friends...

What they need to do is wait for a republican administration, then only confirm for AG a bitter lackey, who is so filled with hate for being humiliated after being nominated for the supreme court that all he wants is payback, and then start sending contempt charges to the AG. then you will get the same results that the democrats get.
