Vice President Kamala Harris could become the third Democrat to win in Nebraska in 60 years, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by conservative pollster Remington Research Group between August 14 and 17, shows that Harris is leading former President Donald Trump by 8 points when third party candidates are included, on 50 percent to Trump's 42 percent in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, with a 3.8 percent margin of error.

Nebraska is a historically Republican state, having voted GOP in nearly every presidential election since its statehood. However, since it is one of two states that splits its Electoral College votes, with two votes awarded based on the statewide vote, and one vote for each of its three congressional districts, the Democrats could see an Electoral College victory in the state in November.

National polls also suggest that the race is set to be tight, with Harris currently polling marginally ahead of Trump, so one Electoral College vote from Nebraska could break a tie.

"My gut tells me we're headed to a competitive race," Remington Research Group president Titus Bond told the Nebraska Examiner.

"There is a path for Nebraska 2 to be ground zero," he added.

Two other Democratic nominees have in recent history achieved a victory in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District — Obama in 2008 and Biden in 2020

However, Harris' 8 point lead is a record for the Democrats in Nebraska's 2nd District, which Biden won by 6 points in 2020, with 52 percent to Trump's 46 percent, while Obama won the district by 1 point in 2008, with 49 percent of the vote.

According to FiveThirtyEight's poll tracker, Harris' 8 point lead is the biggest lead for the Democrats in the district's polls of the 2024 election.

Before she entered the race, polls showed Trump and Biden were tied, or that they were narrowly trailing each other, the poll tracker shows.

Despite her lead, the poll shows that there are some issues that give Trump an advantage, including immigration and inflation. The poll shows that Trump has a 2 point lead over Harris on immigration, with 46 percent of CD2 voters saying the former president would best handle the issue of immigration, while 44 percent chose Harris.

On inflation, Trump had a 1 point lead, with 46 percent of CD2 voters saying Trump would be better to solve the issue of inflation, compared to 45 percent for Harris.

However, the poll also showed voters trusted Harris more with the economy, with 47 percent of voters saying the vice president would be best for the economy, while 46 percent chose Trump.

Jane Kleeb, the chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, told the Examiner she had seen at least one other poll recently that indicated Harris was leading outside of the margin of error in CD2.

"It's always obviously a good feeling when polls match what you're seeing with your own eyes," Kleeb said from the DNC in Chicago. "There's no question that CD2 is more in line with the values and vision of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. The poll numbers are definitely tracking what we're seeing on the ground."

The Remington Research Group survey is the first poll to be released in the state since Harris became the candidate.

Previous polls showed Trump was between 7 and 23 points ahead of Biden statewide, according to FiveThirtyEight.

In 2020, Trump won Nebraska by 19 points. In 2016, he won the state by 25 points, according to exit polls.
