Given that testimony was barred that would have acquitted him, I think time served for a crime that no one is sure that he did, is fair.

I read through whatever I could find on Leonard Peltier's conviction and the term extreme miscarriage of justice just doesn't do justice here. Peltier should never have been convicted of murder on the flimsy grounds the government presented. The man certainly is no saint but he definitely deserved a lot better treatment than he got. He should have been freed long before now.

Flimsy grounds is an understatement, Doc. The misconduct by the FBI was extreme. I have been with this case and have read every document ever written and all the court proceeding since the beginning of the illegal extradition from Canada and before that I knew Leonard since 1968. All of the founding members of AIM have walked on Leonard and a few others are the last links to a time when AIM changed how the US government treated NA’s. Many wide ranging laws were passed after AIM became involved. Leonard paid the price but his strength was a symbol to all of us, ‘’we are still here’’.

He can go home to his land, Turtle Mountain, ND and see the rolling hills and forest, Pembina, Walhalla and the home to our people, the Ojibwe, Cree and Metis that live together, in peace at Turtle Mountain.

It has to be a bittersweet feeling for a lot of people.   It could have been done a long time ago.

Indeed it is JR, I’m very happy that I lived long enough to see Leonard return to his homeland of Turtle Mountain. I only wish that Dennis Banks and the founders of AIM had lived long enough to see this moment.

At 80 years old  this commutation basically to house arrest/ confinement  sounds more like they are sending him home to die  so that he doesnt die in prison .

Yes, it does sound that way, but he is going to a home that we have built for him and he will be surrounded by by friends, family in the land he grew up in, Turtle Mountain, which is beauitful. After 50 years it is more than time and yes he is ill with a bad heart, diabetics and he is nearly blind.

The important thing is he's going home to be surrounded by family and friends and the land he grew up on. May be house arrest but it sounds like it's where he wants to be
