Trump tosses the book at Colombia

Colombia has decided that it will not accept U.S. military aircraft with migrants being deported.

President Trump has responded:

Colombia will now face tariffs of 25% on all Colombian goods coming into the United States and that may rise to 50% in one week.

Colombian officials will be banned from the US.

More may follow.

It took an hour for Columbia to back down and agree to take back their own citizens.

It's that easy. But for decades it was supposedly impossible..

Not the point.

Columbia accepted those flights during the Biden admin. My guess is there were no more than 2 or three on each flight.

Columbia decided to not accept flights during the Trump admin. Contrary to some claims here that he acts recklessly, he made his demands and Columbia agreed.

Trump is a negotiator by nature. Columbia found that out and lost.

Not a very good one, since Biden sent 475 flights with no threats and Trump fucked up and  the first two of his were turned back so he has to institute tariffs etc.

Columbia announced that it had instituted 25% tariffs on American imports. Tit for Tat and the more interesting things is that the US had a trade surplus with Columbia…In addition Columbia is one of our closets allies in Central America and we have a free trade agreement with them. Let’s see how that is gong to work.

What is more threatening is the US getting its Coffee from Brazil and its Bananas from Guatemala.

That leaves Columbia without a prime market. Unsold goods sitting in warehouses to go with drug lords & mosquitos.

However, this just came in:

"Colombian President Gustavo Petro offered his presidential plane to repatriate migrants coming back from the U.S. on Sunday in response to stern warnings made by President Donald Trump.

The move came after Trump hit the South American country with retaliatory measures in response to Petro's refusal to accept deportation flights. A former member of the M-19, which was a Marxist guerrilla terrorist group that killed hundreds, Petro caved in to Trump's demands with remarkable speed. Trump told Fox News Petro did a total about-face after his tariff threat.

In a statement translated from Spanish, the Colombian government said the plane will help facilitate a "dignified return."

when Colombia fails to pay the tariffs

Colombia wouldn’t pay the tariffs. Exporters don’t pay tariffs. Tariffs are paid by importers. The money is collected by US Customs when the item comes into the country, and the money goes to the Department of the Treasury. The importer then passes that cost on to distributors, who pass it on to retailers, who pass it on to consumers.

American consumers will pay the tariffs, not Colombia. A tariff functions as a tax on our own people.

By the way; do you know what the fuck colonialism means?

Merriam-Webster disagrees with your definition.

Trump forcing Columbia to take their own people back; by using sanctions and tariffs is in no way shape or form colonialism. He is not turning their government into a puppet of the US. Which the US did plenty of in South America previously.

These are people in our  country illegally being returned to their homeland. A foreign government tried to  refuse to let its own citizens return to their country, in violation of its legal obligations, and progressives side with the foreign government. Unbelievable.

There is NOTHING cruel about using them.  A C-130 or C-17 are perfectly good aircraft.  No need for an improved runway, can be set up in several different configurations depending on the cargo / passengers carried...

Using military aircraft also provides a training element those involved.

Not really. Commodities like that are purchased on multi-year contracts. Starbucks, for example, has huge contracts to both buy coffee from Columbia, and promote farming in that country. Contracts like that are negotiated on terms of multiple years. They don’t just evaporate because some idiot decided to impose a tariff.

You think that your double latte with 5 half pumps of cream and foam is going to go up because of it?  That multi-year contract also has a price tag attached.  Tariffs that are put into place after negotiations are not included in that price.  So your already overpriced foo foo drink won't increase in price.
