U.S. votes against U.N. resolution condemning Russia for Ukraine war

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

The United States voted with Russia, North Korea, Belarus and 14 other Moscow-friendly countries Monday on a resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine and calling for its occupied territory to be returned that passed overwhelmingly in the U.N. General Assembly on Monday.

The U.S. delegation also abstained on its own separate resolution that called simply for a negotiated end to the war after European-sponsored amendments inserting new anti-Russian language also passed the 193-member body by a wide margin.

The votes were a clear sign of opposition by major U.S. allies as well as countries throughout the Global South who were prepared to buck heavy diplomatic pressure from the Trump administration to support President Donald Trump’s efforts to quickly end the war through direct negotiations with Moscow.

A State Department official, speaking on the condition of anonymity about the fast-moving diplomacy, said the United States would introduce its resolution at a meeting of the 15-member U.N. Security Council later Monday and would veto any amendments.

“While our partners at the Security Council and in the General Assembly would like to debate the entire situation now, we are much more focused on just getting the parties to the table so that whatever the next step is can be undertaken,” the official said

Richard Gowan, a U.N. expert at the International Crisis Group, said the divide between the United States and Europe marked “the biggest split among Western powers at the U.N. since the Iraq War — and probably even more fundamental.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.

More evidence that Putin is controlling Trump.

It is one bad move after another with Trump at the helm.

And his supporters obliviously keep on trying to defend this buffoon.

Trump needs to kick the UN out of the US, just put a bullet in it already. Let the terrorists states that run it pay for and house it.

Okay you group of cowardly fucktartds that currently occupy the UN, put your money and people where your mouth is, start shipping your troops and weapons to Ukraine and enforce this resolution you all voted for. Lets see you step up and show the conviction of your beliefs.

In the real world, George NATO and EU countries have given billions in aid/weapons to Ukraine over the last three years.

Morning Kavika... it's nice being in the same time zone for a change..

Heaps of countries outside the EU and NATO have given weapons/aid to Ukraine..

Our effort so far 1.5 billion, NZ 130 million along with heaps of other countries around the world...

We also sent over 120 Bush Masters which apparently Ukraine are absolutely delighted with..more will follow..

Not sure how they got them over there obviously by air, so the US may have helped out...

Not my photo..🇭🇲🇺🇦

I can't speak for George, but it appears to me that he's suggesting sending a combat force under the UN flag to enforce the resolution should be a doable thing if the UN was legitimate. If so, it speaks to the irrelevancy of the UN in such matters. Permanent Members of the Security Counsel is what makes a mockery of the UN as they are the only member nations that matter. The rest of the nations are just window dressing. If the UN had any moral authority at all, it could have threatened to expel Russia for the invasion and actually had the power to do it.

Exactly, let the European community commit their troops to forcibly expel Russian troops from Ukraine, not write a check but actually put skin in the game. They voted for it, now start mobilizing their troops.

Oh dear  jrSmiley_78_smiley_image.gif

Those on the left would rather make a big show of... condemning Russia for the Ukraine war!!!! rather than seeking a compromise through diplomacy, which is the only face-saving move for Zelensky at this point. Some seem to think wasting a few more billion dollars will make Putin surrender!

Or FDR or Harry S Truman who sent Russia a huge message with the Berlin Airlift. Certainly worth reading about this magnificent rescue mission, like non other.

It might be time for our MAGAs to read the Truman Doctrine of 1947 when we, the USA really were the leaders of the free world.

Did we demand the repayment of the Marshall Plan after WWII? No, we did not and this plan turned the world into a much bettter place with ruined countries becoming economic powerhouses still today and the US becoming the real leader of the ‘’Free World.’’

I believe you're trying to compare Trump to Chamberlain. If so, it's not going to work, as you are attempting to apply it to a totally different situation.

Chamberlain's actions were, however misguided, an attempt to stop war prior to Hitler's actions. Trump is dealing with a situation three years after they have occurred. That doesn't mean he's doing it well or that I approve of what he's saying or doing. Simply that they aren't comparable.

Actually no one on the Left that I have seen is making a “big show” of condemning Russia beyond what has already been said for three years. But no one who cares about the truth is going to stand mute while idiots declare that Ukraine is somehow responsible for this war. And to that point, it’s not simply “the Ukraine War.” It’s Russia’s war. They invaded a sovereign nation that they themselves officially recognized 30 years earlier.

Suddenly America’s nutbag far Right is the one making a big show, but of acting like Ukraine is the party most responsible for this war. Why? Because the dumbass-in-chief said they are. That’s all it took for all the cult sycophants to throw Reason in the trash. Now, it’s all about making Russia happy, with no concern at all for what Ukraine or its people want and need. MAGA wants to make peace with an aggressive bully by having the victim pay restitution. It’s insanity.

The only acceptable and honorable way to end this conflict is for Russia to totally withdraw from Ukrainian territory as of their independence from the Soviet Union.

One has to wonder what the Greatest Generation thinks of the US and its policies today. It is difficult to believe that they see any upside to this miserable showing of self congratulations and bullying which will lead to much more authoritarian rule than ever before in the US.

Critical thinking isn’t part of the MAGA make up.

You know, I can't tell you how many times peeps here and there have been ticketed for calling each other illiterate or uneducated.

My Father and his five brothers all served in WWII as did several of my Mother's brothers.   Almost everyone of them had an eighth grade education.  Only the girls went to high school for some reason.  Everyone else worked at the family dealership.

One used the GI Bill to become a CPA, the rest languished in the auto industry for the rest of their lives each dealing with what we now recognize as PTSD.

I confess, I cannot account for the level of enmity evident here and in the current WH.  This white grievance is a mystery.

Indeed, SP my father and his brothers and my others family all served in WWII none of them had a high school diploma, in fact I would have to help my father understand some documents, education does not mean intellligent moral standing or backbone. That takes a real man or women which there seem to be less of today than with the greatest generation.

In my culture, Native American it is always talked about the NA Warrior Culture, when in reality among the indigenous community it means much more.

For thousands of years, American Indians have protected their communities. A warrior’s customary role, however, involved more than fighting. Warriors cared for families in need and helped during difficult times. They did anything to ensure their people’s survival, including laying down their lives. Many American Indians view service in the U.S. Armed Forces as a continuation of the customary role.

One of the most important things that can happened to you as an Indian is to be awarded the ‘’Eagle Feather’’ this is not only awarded for bravery in battle but for providing something outside of battle that help the tribe or families. This feather (s) is kept for life and when you walk on the feather (s) are placed in your grave.

Perhaps it’s time for reflection on what traditions are and what they should be.

Wanaakiwin. (Peace)

A sad day for the United States, when the country sides with Russia and North Korea and against the democracies of the world.

A demonstration of the lack of honor and decency in the current administration
