El Salvador’s Bukele Says He Doesn’t Have Power to Return Mistakenly Deported Man
“You have 350 million people to liberate,” he told Trump. “But to liberate 350 million people, you have to imprison some.”

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

WASHINGTON—El Salvador President   Nayib Bukele   said he doesn’t have the authority to return to   the U.S. a migrant deported in error   to a Salvadoran maximum-security prison.

“Of course, I’m not going to do it,” Bukele said during a Monday meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office. “How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? I don’t have the power to return him to the United States.”

In the same Oval Office meeting, Trump administration officials objected to a federal judge’s ruling that the U.S. should facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was deported in what the Trump administration acknowledged was an “administrative error.”

Stephen Miller, the White House’s deputy chief of staff for policy, said that if Abrego Garcia were returned, the Trump administration would deport him again. “No version of this, legally, ends up with him ever living here,” he said, arguing the courts can’t compel the White House’s foreign policy.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said during the meeting that it was “up to El Salvador if they want to return him,” adding, “That’s not up to us.”

Abrego Garcia was one of the more than 200 alleged gang members flown to El Salvador for indefinite detention at the country’s Centro de Contenimiento del Terrorismo, or Cecot, a sprawling prison built to hold 40,000 people that has become a symbol of Bukele’s crackdown against gangs.

Bukele struck a deal with the Trump administration to detain those migrants for $6 million a year. Asked on Monday how many more deportees he intended to send to El Salvador, Trump said “as many as possible.”

“It has been wonderful for us to be able to have somewhere to send the worst of the worst,” Homeland Security Secretary   Kristi Noem   told Bukele during the Oval Office meeting.

Trump also said he would be open to deporting U.S. citizens to the notorious prison “if they’re criminals,” a proposal raised by Bukele with Secretary of State   Marco Rubio   during Rubio’s visit to El Salvador in February.

Sitting next to Trump, Bukele said he was “very eager to help” the U.S. by continuing to take alleged gang members and other deportees into his prison system.

“You have 350 million people to liberate,” he told Trump. “But to liberate 350 million people, you have to imprison some.”

that guy won't be coming back alive. that dictator's statement was the whole reason for trump's news conference, along with an opportunity for the fetid bag of shit sitting in the oval office to reiterate and recite his litany of lies for his unamerican cult of the mentally challenged. trump desperately needs americans to buy his line of unconstitutional bullshit in the hopes that it will get him off the legal hook.

Why do you support Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a known gang member and terrorist, and want him back here in the US?

... due process, like it's explained in the constitution, that millions of americans have died defending.

Why do you believe Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a known gang member and terrorist? No charges have ever been filed against Garcia related to his supposed involvement with MS-13 so why do you claim he is a "known gang member and terrorist"? Because a Trump official made the claim with zero evidence so far? If a Biden official claimed you were a terrorist, should we all have just automatically believed them because they were a government official?

So, I don't know if this guy, or you for that matter, are a gang member or terrorist. What I do believe in is due process and that is what I support. Sadly, some tired dried pieces of excrement with no brains and no allegiance to the constitution feel it necessary to prejudge folk and just assume they're guilty and that they deserved being rounded up and deported into a foreign prison system without any due process. And what's really interesting is that this decision to prejudge often works in concert with some folks racial and cultural biases and they often just assume those with certain heritages must be guilty of something or are somehow inferior and thus don't feel they deserve due process.

It's expedient and doesn't require any in depth thought about the so-called administrative error that landed this man where he is. And let's hope he's alive

. “No version of this, legally, ends up with him ever living here,” he said, arguing the courts can’t compel the White House’s foreign policy.

That's obviously correct. He's been subject to deportation for years. The issue is he wasn't supposed to be deported to El Salvador because of his alleged fear of a gang that no longer exists.   He'd either be sent to a third country or Guantanamo.

“But to liberate 350 million people, you have to imprison some.”

Another obvious fact.  Bekele's success has led to El Salvador now being deemed safer for travel than France or Sweden.  Simply an amazing success for a country that was one of the most violent in the world a decade ago. He's saved thousands of lives.

Not to be seen as a payback by the Trump admin ... eh? Other nations such as Canada retain 'high degree-of-caution' alerts:

Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia initially entered the U.S. illegally in 2011. However, in 2019, an immigration judge granted him withholding of removal status, which allowed him to live and work legally in the U.S. due to the threat of gang violence in his home country. Despite this, he was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March 2025, an action that was later acknowledged as an administrative error by U.S. officials. His case has since become a legal battle, with courts ordering the U.S. government to facilitate his return4. chat gpt4

The order only prevented his removal to El Salvador. He could still be deported anywhere else.

except they sent him to an El Salvador prison. Bring him back and conduct the process in the proper way.

You know this is not going to be tolerated in the long run.

Perhaps, just perhaps, El Salvador deemed it necessary to put him into that prison. Their call actually whether prison or the streets.

It's hard to take conservatives complaints over lawlessness seriously anymore when they elected a convicted felon to run the nation. Wouldn't it be great if they would take our current criminal-in-chief as one of those hundred? Perhaps this ongoing global embarrassment would end.
