The Trump administration has agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of Ashli Babbitt , a Trump supporter who was killed when she tried to storm the House Speaker's lobby during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol , according to media reports.
Babbitt's family filed the lawsuit in early 2024, seeking $30 million for her death. Financial details of the settlement weren't revealed at a Friday hearing in a D.C. federal court, according to CBS News and Washington Post reports.
U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd shot and killed 35-year-old Babbitt as members of Congress were still in the lobby after Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol to try to stop congressional certification of Joe Biden 's 2020 election victory.
Babbitt's mother, Micki Witthoeft , has emerged as a stalwart advocate for the Jan. 6 rioters who faced criminal charges in the months and years following the attack. She was charged with two traffic violations in early 2023, including failing to obey Capitol Police orders, during a protest on the two-year anniversary of the attack .
The settlement comes after Trump granted clemency to about 1,500 defendants who faced charges for their alleged – and in many instances, convicted – roles in the attack.
In the lawsuit, Babbitt's estate alleged that Babbitt wrongfully died as a result of government negligence. Under the Biden administration, Justice Department lawyers moved to dismiss several of the claims in the lawsuit. Four days after Trump took office on Jan. 20, department lawyers and Babbitt's estate asked for a scheduled court hearing on that motion to be delayed .

A tiny bit of justice.
I can't make up my mind on this subject. Byrd went straight to 11 concerning his response, but Babbitt put herself in that position. Had Babbitt been Antifa in her affiliation, I think you'd be singing a different tune.
And the "justice" of it is dependent upon one's political affiliation, I think. Did the "Trump administration" agree to settle because of 'justice' or because, politically, it confirmed Trump's view of the issue?
There is room for both here. Babbitt isn’t blameless because her actions put her there but her actions didn’t rise to that level of response. Not even close.
Simply dismissing her case certainly wasn’t fair.
I don't disagree. My point is more towards whether or not justice was actually done or was it simply political? Regardless, I think the monetary reward is unjustified. While I think Byrd was wrong in his actions, that doesn't mean Babbitt didn't play a stupid game and collected a stupid reward. At this time and absent a reasonable argument otherwise, I don't think that should be rewarded.
Agreed, unfortunately the right thing often gets done for the wrong reason in DC. If it ever gets done in the first place.
Let us pretend it was antifa.
Antifa staged its violent protests mostly in democrat-controlled locations. During the vicious 2020 riots police in those areas were ordered to STAND DOWN. I have to believe that if antifa staged the same protest at the Capitol if Trump won, Pelosi or the DC mayor would have had them stand down. And i very much doubt that the reckless officer Byrd would have shot an antifa protestor, and had anyone killed an antifa protestor, I'd bet it all on Garland prosectuing.
And the "justice" of it is dependent upon one's political affiliation, I think. Did the "Trump administration" agree to settle because of 'justice' or because, politically, it confirmed Trump's view of the issue?
You can make that argument at least. I prefer to see Byrd prosecuted.
justice would have been having babbit officially labeled a traitor and the coroner releasing her corpse with a bullet riddled skull back to babbit's mother, along with every other maga tourist that breached the capitol that day leaving with a bullet damaged vital organ.
And a good morning to you too. S/
Be careful, that is a slippery slope.
What a sick, pos post.
Congress were still in the lobby? Really? Not according to the video.
Here us a very short clip of just the shooting. See any Congress critters in the lobby?
Here is the reporter that was with Babbit- seems Babbit was actually aided officers and punched the man who shattered the glass window. This evidence was shown to the Jan 6th committee; who promptly ignored it- like any evidence that didn't fit their narrative.
Another video showing the 3 officers that were blocking the door stepping aside as the SWAT team moves into position. Again Congress members were long gone- despite the narrative by the government.
This is the same Barney Fife that left his gun unattended in a Capitol restroom. That fired his weapon with his neighbor in the line of fire. Yet wasn't removed from the force.
If this had been an Antifa or worse still a BLM rioter Byrd had killed the same way- he would be up on charges; and DC would pay the family whatever they wanted no questions asked.
