Grandma and The Giant Cow

At 5' 0" tall, (or as Grandpa said, 5 feet, naught), I know what it is like to be short. I have never seen the top of the refrigerator unless I'm standing on a chair. I can't reach anything in my top kitchen cabinets. I can work and tug, with the tips of my fingers, and get that 30 pound bag of kitty litter off the top shelf in the grocery store, but I have to catch it on it's way down.

Yet, I am one of the taller women in the family. Grandma was 4' 10", and Aunt Lois was 4' 11", but shrunk to 4' 6". Both of them told me, "You're so tall!!!"

Since I had once cut my chin on one of the basketball player's belt buckle, I knew that, in the real world, I am short.

Grandma and I shared this characteristic, as we share the scourge of small feet and hands. Grandma wore a size 4B shoe, and I wear a size 5B. She was fortunate to have various shoe salesmen come into town and sell her samples. I just go to the children's department, any more, and buy my shoes there.

Grandma passed away in 1976, and I carefully saved all her lovely gloves, the find kids, the long white elbow length, the short lacy ones, and naturally, no one wears gloves any more. Which is fine by me, but still somewhat of a disappointment. It was something that fit.

Then I found this picture. I want to say this is in the 1920s, based on Grandma's young age, and the hemline of her dress. She and Grandpa traveled a lot in the late 1920s, after Eliza Francis' death in 1925.

Since Grandpa worked for the L&N railroad, he got to ride the trains for free. This was a courtesy extended to all railroad workers everywhere. They also were able to ship things on trains for free. So, in later years, my Great-Grandmother Hutchison would load all her many plants into the freight car at New Castle, and bring them with her for her winter visit to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Owensboro.

Grandma and Grandpa took a trip to Arkansas in the late 1920s. I remember them talking about it, and whomever they visited had a prize cow. The cow is perhaps a Texas longhorn, but it reminds me of the Aurochs that are painted on cave walls in France... It obviously made quite an impression on them, because it was HUGE. Maybe it was an ox.

Fortunately, I found a picture. Smile.gif

5' 8" is a great height! My husband is 5' 11", the same height as Grandpa. But, in his family, his father was 6' 4", his older brother is 6' 8", his younger brother is 6' 4", and his sister is 6'. One sister is about 5' 7". When they come to visit, they have to lean over to see the pictures on the wall, because I hang them at my eye level.

My husband's height comes in handy, too! So far, he has always been really nice about reaching things for me. Grin.gif

Everyone in my family is over 6 feet, including my daughter. Everyone except my son, who is 5' 9''..Something that he blames everyone for. Grin.gif

That's quite the steer Dowser. Don't want to make him angry.

Blames? Matthew is likely going to be about 5' 8", and he's not tall enough, he thinks. I think it's plenty tall enough, and tell him-- Hey, you couldn't be over 6', unless we watered you with Miracle-Gro... He's starting off with at least one of us shorter than normal...

I wouldn't want to make him mad, either!!!

Well, thank heavens my feet reach the ground! I'm the same height as Danny DeVito, and look how well he has done in life!

I once dated a man that was 6' 8" tall. His arm was longer than his car was wide, (he drove an MG). I really liked him, but we couldn't walk down the street and carry on a conversation without shouting up and down to each other... To dance with him, I stood on a chair. Nice guy, but we broke up because, as he said, "It's too much work."

Everyone is the same height lying down. Being an even 5' tall, it has come in handy for measuring drilling pipes and stems-- is it two of me, three of me, or four of me?

Take care, dear friend! Grin.gif

Yeah, but what can you do? If that's the way they feel, that's the way they feel. As in, "Bye. Have a good life."

Dowser,

Since I had once cut my chin on one of the basketball player's belt buckle, I knew that, in the real world, I am short.

What, pray tell, were you doing around a basketball players belt buckle to begin with??!?!

Your Gramma was quite fit apparently, and the gentleman next to her looks happy to be there with her. Is that your grampa?

Being tall isn't always fun either. I'm 6'3" and was always taller than the boys in school. Every shower head points right at my boobs and I can rest my chin on it... makes washing hair a pain when you have to stoop.

Dont get me started on sink height, counter height, chair heights or any other furniture sizes. Finding a car to crawl into from the ground where my knees arent on the dashboard is a challenge.

Shoes (thank goodness for transvestite websites), pant length (better now than when I was younger), sleeve length (I think I have ape arms) and skirts (flashing everyone?) are impossible.

Almost all of my dates were suspiciously just under shoulder height. I think it was because they had an excuse to look straight ahead.

The only good thing is that Im short to average for the family, so I never felt like a freak there.

My grandmother says that my grandfather's great aunt was in the circus for being a giant.

You measure height from your feet up when you're standing and from you head down when laying.

I use to play with the "Spinners".
