Smoke Eater: Iowa fire chief goes on 'hunger strike' for funds

LEHIGH, Iowa An Iowa fire chief is trying an extreme diet to raise money for a new fire station.
Kirk Kelley says he's on a "hunger strike" to raise $480,000 to help expand the Lehigh Fire Department's fire station. He started his quest in late June.
Des Moines television station KCCI reports Kelley's diet involves consuming two protein shakes a day and an occasional cup of fruit juice or bowl of chicken broth. The limited intake has made him lose more than 25 pounds.
Kelley, who has been fire chief since 2008, says he's keeping the diet until the money is raised. He adds the decision is his way of getting attention for the department.
Lehigh is located in Webster County
