Breakfast, lunch and hugs at Tim's Place

A CNN article about Tim:

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/10/health/human-factor-harris/index.html

(CNN) -- I was born in January of 1986. A few hours after I was born, our doctor told my parents that I had Down syndrome.

A lot of people told my parents that they were very, very sorry. I guess they didn't know then just how totally awesome I would turn out to be.

Growing up with three brothers was a lot of fun. They treated me like a brother -- not like someone special or different. They never let me use my disability to get out of doing the dishes when it was my turn. I did try sometimes, though.

I started in Special Olympics when I was 13 years old. My Special Olympic sports are basketball, poly hockey , volleyball, golf and track and field. I have dozens of gold medals....Many of them are on display in my restaurant.

Tim's Place is here in Albuquerque. The grandsons and I have lunch there on occasion. Tim is always smiling, full of free hugs and the fries are great.

Thanks, Six. This kind of stuff doesn't get much attention around NT, but I think it's fun.

What a beautiful video. Good for Tim and Tim's Place.

What people can accomplish if just given the chance is amazing.

Perhaps if you had a child with Downs, you might feel different. Than again, probably not.

Hugging yourown child if he was Downs, is a enriching experience. What you learn is that they have, and will overcome problems that you can't imagine. They have a spirit that cannot be beaten down.

So, for me, if Tim wanted to hug me, I would have no problem with it. But that's me.

Tim gives good, genuine hugs. They are as good for him as they are for the person being hugged.

Heck, I'll hug anyone if I feel they are friendly enough for me to do so, and I'm not trying to get a feel either. I genuinely like to show affection if nothing more than a pull on the shoulder and a big smile. Evidently I haven't hugged anyone who didn't appreciate it, because I've never had anyone show any objection. I think there are a lot of people who like to be hugged. Don't get me wrong, I don't walk around hugging everyone I see.

Grump.... I had a second cousin who was was the last child of my cousin. My cousin was a nurse who has since passed away, but her last child was born with Down's Syndrome. I don't know anyone who was loved by his family and the community more than anyone other than his mother was. He had sleep apnea and passed away in his early 20's. Even though the town wasn't that big, I believe everyone in the town went to his funeral. He was a wonderful person.

That's good to be selective and 'real' with emotions, imo. Touching can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I think it's fine as long as everyone is on the same page with it. For me, close contact isn't a casual gesture.

I think if you and people like you are gaining a mutual regard for each other in your friendship by hugging, that's great!

Six, I'm pretty much the same way. We are a hugging family and our friends get hugs. Even my grandson's friends give him hugs. It makes the world a much better place. There's nothing to be afraid of.

Six,

I just wanted to be sure I was clear: I don't have close body contact with strangers. I 'touch' with hands sometimes when it is someone where I don't have a relationship of some kind. I hug people where I have an emotional attachment. For me, hugging is a gesture of emotional love.

But again, if people are on the same page, it can mean whatever 'they' mutually want it to mean. I've always thought body language speaks louder than words...most of the time.

Tim always asks if he can give you a hug. Very frequently people will ask him for a hug and he is always ready for a quick hug and a pat on the back.
