Heads up, friends. The leaves of the heliotrope plant can kill your pet. Please be ware.

This was posted on my FB page and I thought others might need to see it as well.

10015031_10203366674905130_8266044477344522144_n.jpg We got the biopsy report back and with great sorrow I must share this....Our darling girl died from the toxin in this plant that I have on my deck. It is called heliotrope and is highly toxic, causes total liver destruction. The pathologist said our angel had the worst liver damage he's ever seen. Goldie would nibble at the leaves of this plant every so often and we had no clue it was toxic. (It can come in white or purple.) Please share with any dog owners you know to hopefully prevent their dog from becoming a statistic like Goldie. We are even more heartbroken now knowing her death was preventable. Please share her story so that something positive may come of it and create awareness of toxic plants. Our own vet had no idea this was a toxic plant!!

We are responsible for the safety of our pets. Our job is to know what plants in our yards may be harmful to them.

Absolutely. My sister almost lost her dog due to a tomato plant. Who knew their leaves were toxic? He did lost his eye because it increased the internal pressure so much.

I have Mom's beloved Iris. I moved them to the front yard because they too are toxic. It's fairly easy to find resources on the Net that will tell us if the plants we love can harm those we love. Just a simple search can save a life.

It was not my pet that died Tzia and I'm very glad of that. This just needed to be seen by as many pet owners as possible.

I'm sorry about your loss Larry . If you don't mind can we add comments about other pet toxic things ? Some of these were surprising :

In a similar vein, I saw an article the other day in our local paper about a dog who had to be put down because it ate a pack of chewing gum containing the artificial sweetener xylitol. It's a sweetener made from birch trees that is gaining popularity in nutrition circles, and is being used more frequently in sugar free gum because it does not promote cavities. It's toxic for dogs though.
